A great poet once said “We grew up cheering for the underdog because we see ourselves in them” (Shane Koyczan To This Day). When you think of a hero what do you think of ? Is it a guy in a cape, or a mom who works three jobs to support her struggling family? When you read that comic book where hero starts as a regular person. Who is just like everyone that no one believes. Everyone was once an underdog even that hero. You kept your faith in someone or something no one else did. And by the end of that comic series that hero did not gain money or get a reward, they paid the overall price.
Hero. A four letter word that has many meanings but one thing in common. But what isnt a hero? What separates a hero from a villain? A hero is not selfish, a hero is brave but is not fearless. A hero does not care for a price tag or a reward for everything they have done. A hero is not always muscular but sometimes frail but strong willed. A hero does not always wear a cape or carry a weapon. A hero is not always a man or women, but can be a boy or dog. A hero does not need a reason to stand up. They make a reason.
A hero isn’t always fighting crime or saving a lives but it can be as simple as making someone’s day. A hero doesn’t even always have to be real. But what is a hero, what is the person we see in a comic book, what do they do that makes them so loveable? What separates a hero from that girl who works at the mall or is she a hero to? A hero is someone who is big or small, fat or skinny, old or young, outgoing or shy. A hero is anyone or anything that does something that’s not to better themselves but to better the lives of others.
A hero can be a dog who saves a boy from a fire. Someone who is very strong physically or a genius who cures cancer. A hero can work all day and all night or just once a day. A hero is always someone who makes something better. In the movie “Kill Bill” a mother who was a trained assassin, gets pregnant and tries to better the life of her unborn child but is shot in the as she is getting married her child is taken from her at the hospital as is given to the father or otherwise known as her master.
She wakes up from coma and fights multiple people and battles to see her old master and her child, she fight him to the death and her child is now finally hers. She was not someone who wore a cape but she fought so many battles for a little girl she never met but still loved; She could have just tried to make a new family and forget the past but instead she risks it all. Animals can also be heroes in the series “The Lion King”. Simba, a cub of Mufasa who is king that was killed because of his uncle Scar but Scar blames Simba.
Simba runs into the jungle and meets a warthog and a meerkat named Pumbaa and Timon. They raise him until one day Nala a lioness who Simba has known since birth goes hunting and finds him. Nala tells him that Scar is trying to take the clan with hyenas. So Simba must save them. He hesitates but knows it’s the right thing. He makes Scar admit that he killed Mufasa then kills Scar. The kingdom is saved because Simba, despite his fears risk his life to save so many others.
These are just some of many movies. Heroes are regular people, animals or characters who do things that make the world a little better. The act can be big or small. It can takes years to complete or maybe just a few seconds. You can be a hero just by making someone’s day, or saving an animal. You started as an underdog at one point but now you can do anything. You can be anything you want to be it just depends on choices you make and the chances you take but always do the right thing.
