Personal description

For the first time, we describe the description of the people in the German language at the elementary school. In the description of the person, an attempt is made to create an exact overall picture of a fictional figure or a real person. Here, it is important to make very detailed statements so that the character described is clearly distinguishable from all others.

What is decisive is that we separate the description of the person clearly from the characterization. They are trying to draw conclusions from their thoughts and actions into a character. The characterization therefore describes a person because of the external and internal view. In contrast, the description of persons is restricted to the external characteristics of a person and does not attempt to interpret them (→ characterization).

Furthermore, it is not a matter of describing a person superficially and only on the basis of their unique features. Rather, an attempt is made to go very deeply into the depths. This means that even the smallest details in the description of the person must be taken into account, such as small cracks in clothing or even inconspicuous features on the face.

In principle, a personal description makes exactly what their name already says, but also not more. Therefore we should renounce any interpretation of the individual characteristics and merely describe what is obvious and apparent.
Prepare person description
Before the actual writing of such a person description can go, it makes sense to make some preparations, in order not to write in the blue.

Prepare person description
In a first step, we look at the picture of our person extensively and write down all the details that are immediately apparent to us. This is not a matter of looking at the portrait or the sketch, but recognizing every feature. If the image of the person to be described is very complex, this step may take a few minutes.

It is important that we also note the most inconspicuous characteristics of a person, so that we can not forget them afterwards. This can happen quite quickly if we later try to capture the overall image of a character.
Organization of the personal description: If the first step is done, we can make an approximate outline of the description of the person who, on the one hand, outlines the structure and, on the other hand, already contains the essential details of our person.

This can be meaningful insofar as we make sure not to forget a single feature in the description of the person and not to name any features twice. For this, you can simply follow our exemplary structure of the personal description.

Structure of a person description
Basically, we work with a person description from the obvious features to the inconspicuous details. So we go from the big to the small.

Also, it is important to keep a logical order by describing the person from one direction to the other. For example, from head to toe so that a reader can surely follow our explanations and are not confused because we are making numerous jumps into the reading flow.
