People wish to make their lives better. In generally people only wish for things that they might want or need. Some wishes can be selfish because they only think about themselves and when they do that then they would not think about the other things that could affect it. “The Monkey’s Paw” “Goldfish” and “The Three Brothers” will relate. Wishes shows a person’s character through how they act, how they think and what they say. In the short story of “The Monkeys Paw” By Jacobs, W. W. Mr. White wished for 200 pounds to pay off his house (36).
It was not something he really wanted but did not believe that the wishes were true so he was testing to see if the wish actually works. The second brother made a wish that be wanted but he was just thinking that if he wished for his wished everything would have been back to normal, as he wished to bring back people from the dead, he didn’t think about the people in the mortal world, he was making a selfish wish to make himself happy again.
After he got what he wanted it did go to well and as they were suffering and he dusts away he hangs himself. This impacted his whole life just to wish to bring someone back. Some reasons for people to wish is to for them to be happy for others, to make everything better and others wishes are that he just think about themselves. In “Monkey’s Paw” this tells us that Mrs. White is selfish and was just thinking about herself to bring back her son. Mr. White used it as a purpose use as if he needed it. In ‘What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish? ” it tells us that Sergio used his wishes for other people that he loved.
It tells us that is just wants others to be happy and safe, he did not want his sister to suffer, also Sveta for her son. In The Three Brothers. It shows us that two of the brothers used it as a selfish wish for themselves, it shows us that they just cared about themselves. But the third brother used it for himself but as they years passed by he handed what he wished for to his son, but he was as pleasant to leave with death, as he greeted him nicely. Some of the issues the people who wished can encounter is death, or sometimes happiness along the way.
For “The Monkey’s Paw” it didn’t go as Mrs. White asked for, she never got her wished and she did not handle it too well. As for Mr. White he knew how it would be, all he did is protect himself and his wife. In “What, of This Goldfish, Would You Wish? ” Sergio encountered an issue where he wanted to help Sveta but she ending up leaving after Sergio heeled her son but never told her. Also he encountered be bring back someone who was dead already, Sergio did not want to so he could keep the fish instead of just saving Yohannan’s life.
In The Three Brothers they all encountered death, but the last one it took longer for death to come, as he wished to be protected from death so it could not get him. They could not handle it but after their wishes and using them selfishly as they used it in a bad way. People seem to just wish for thing so they could be happy, or to make other people happy. Some just think about themselves do that they can live a good and better life. Other just think, what if I help them out? Would they be happy, would this be what they want?
