Why Athletes Get Paid? Research Paper

Has anyone ever wondered what it is like to be rich by playing a favorite sport an individual likes and advertising for a famous named brand companies like Nike or Adidas? All around the world individuals are interested in sports and everyone has a favorite athlete because sports entertain people when they are bored. There are numerous sports for example, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, golf, boxing, and etc. that anyone can play. Being an athlete is everyone’s dream come true because athletes make a lot of money depending on how good the athlete is.

There are three commercial’s that will help support y essay, which is LeBron James in a Beats by Dre. commercial on YouTube, the Nike: Snow Day commercial, and Adidas Is In All Commercial feat. Justice – Civilization. There are eight sources that will support my essay which are “American Dream” by Kevin Jennings, “Masters of Desire: The Culture of American Advertising” by Jack Solomon, “The Treadmill Consumption” by James A. Roberts, “Nike v.

Kasky: Corporations Are Not Persons” by Jennifer Van Bergen, “Nike Drops Manny Pacquiao Over Anti- Gay Remarks” by Feeney, Nolan, ” Race of Athlete spokesperson and impact and explicit responses to advertising” by Howon Jeong, “Pacquiao shares his blessing with poor, not his foes” by Bob Velin, and “In Praise of Athletes’ High Salaries” by William Anderson. Although sport athletes make a lot of money through advertisements, sports athletes represent an American dream, identity, and race, through consumerism which also leads to individuals is having high hopes to have a career that is to became a famous athlete rather than a minimum wage job.

Firstly, a famous athletics is a career in which an athlete plays a sport that gets fame through his or her fans when an athlete is winning. Being a famous athlete role is to practice, eat healthy, and to have a positive attitude when they are playing a sport. Athletes get paid based on how good they are rather than what position they are in. If people get a contract to become an athlete then they have to stay in that team until their contract expires. Athletes have to follow rules for example not to under the influence while being on the team and not to use harsh words when athletes play other teams.

Being an athlete is easier than being nurse because athletes do not have to have a degree. Famous athletes only have to show that they are good nough to be on the team. If athletes are disrespectful then they could lose their career because coaches only like loyal teammates. Being an athlete is easier than a nurse because athletes do no have to go to school to earn a degree. Famous athletes have to be really good at a sport because that is how the world is going to notice them through advertising. Athletes live a American dream by showing off their nice car, luxury house, shoes, and other products.

Secondly, advertisement companies use famous sport athletes to advertise their products, so that the company will make a lot f money by using famous athletes to attract consumers. An example is the LeBron James Beats headphones by Dr. Dre commercial on YouTube. It depicts LeBron James working out with the headphones and it also shows how people want to be like their famous athletes, which makes the consumers buy the product. LeBron also makes people think that if they wear the headphones they will make the consumers feel motivated and strong.

LeBron James makes a lot of money by advertising for Dr. Dre, Kia, Powerade, and Nike. This is an escape from society to individuals because they want to be like their famous athlete, ut it is hard because there are limited spots on a famous sport team. According to Jack, “America’s consumer economy runs on desire, and advertising strokes the engines.. ” (Solomon 167). In American society, everyone has a strong desire to buy products and especially when the new products come out. Individuals will want to buy all the new products because they are the ones that are trending in society.

People are going to want something more for example the Beats headphones because a really good basketball player was advertising it. In addition, companies lure consumers by using famous elebrities, so that the celebrities and the companies will make a lot of money. The companies also tell athletes how to act in the commercial and what to say because commercials are false advertising. The companies tell the athletes what to say when they are advertising the products and the company tells them misleading facts about the product.

The consumer will believe the advertisements because the consumers think it is true what the athletes are claiming the product to be. The world views famous athletes as being honest, so individuals will believe everything that the athletes are saying. The main goal is for companies to make a lot of money through using famous athletes, so that their product will be seen in society because sports is famous in the world. In todays society, individuals will always want something even though they already got what they want which leads to consumerism.

Thirdly, sports advertisement is also the idea of being elite and how athletes are being portrayed. Sports advertisements are mainly targeted to athletes, but other people that are not in sports also wear it. Numerous people wear Nike and it looks like they are athletic, but they are not. An example of how athletes act like they are strong and tough is the Nike Snow Day commercial on YouTube. The famous athletes were playing in the snow and in one scene a famous football player threw a heavy weight and the other guy caught it like nothing.

Athletes show that if they wear Nike they will be warm and strong in the snow. In contrast, the commercial is false advertising because nobody can catch a weight with a lot of pounds on it. According to Jennifer Van Bergen, “Indeed, granting amoral entities so-called equal rights with persons, which because of corporations’ great wealth and ower become greater rights, is so irrational it ought to be considered a kind of insanity”. Companies will not get in trouble for making their athletes perform something elite because the company is wealthy and can get away with it.

Bergen believes that it is not right to mislead consumers into buy products because it is misleading. The companies should not use misleading actions, but they do it because the companies want people to remember what happened in the commercials. Athletes look elite in the advertisement because of the product that the company is trying to sell to attract consumers. The companies’ goal is to catch everyone’s attention, so that their product is going to be seen.

In today’s society, individuals will believe anything they see in the commercials. Similarly, athletes that are shown, that are elite in product advertisements is a good and bad. The good thing is that if an individual is not athletic and they buy the product then people will think the person look athletic. In contrast, the bad problem is that if an individual is athletic and they want gloves that would make the athletes hands warm, but the advertisers are isleading because it doesn’t make consumers hand warm in the commercial.

According to James, “One important reason that consumers buy products is to satisfy social needs”(Roberts 125). Sports advertisements are the reason why consumers buy products because they want what their favorite athletes are wearing. In addition, individuals will pay anything for the product because their famous athletes have the product. If athletes are advertising cloths and food products then individuals will always buy the products because it is part of their social needs.
