The Negative Consequences Of Gun Control Essay

The first mass shooting was in Austin, Texas in 1966 by Charles Whitman at the University of Texas. He snipped fourteen people and wounded thirty-two others in less than ninety minutes. Students used their weapons from their vehicles and helped police take him down. Democratic parties are scared to bring up the topic of gun control because they fear that they will lose votes to the people that do not want gun control. Gun laws are intended to limit the amount of guns in an area and lower crime rates, but people with mental problems do not follow those rules.

They set their minds on killing people and that is what they do. If gun control became stricter, then there would still be gun violence because criminals would be armed making unarmed citizens easy targets. No one can stop them because they are set on killing no matter what. They do not have to suffer the consequences of killing the people they do because most of them kill themselves when they are about to get caught or after they finish what they planned to do. Therefore gun control will not limit crime rates, it will just limit the civilians availability to guns for self defense against those kind of people.

In some countries around the world it is said that it is easier to get a machine gun than it is to get a driver’s license. Al Capone was one of the biggest gang runners in the 1930’s and he is the main reason for the federal firearms act of 1938 banning machine guns and sawed off shotguns. In some countries when gun rates go up so do the crime rates. Other countries like in America, gun rates have increased by about ten million and crime rates have gone down.

Americans are more violent than any other country and also have the highest crime rate in the world, but we are in the top of the list for amount of guns, so un control would not really prevent anything. Most of the citizens are armed for self defense against the criminals. In previous years there were between 100,000 and two million cases of self defense in America. Virginia limits gun purchases to one gun per month for safety reasons. Juveniles cannot buy guns in any country because it would be more likely for more crime with younger armed people. In some countries where gun control is really enforced criminals still end up getting guns and committing crimes but targets are easier to choose because they are unarmed.

2% of Americans wanted stricter gun laws after hearing that the gun related crime was at its highest in America. President Obama called for stricter gun laws after the mass shooting in San Bernardino. Obama also urged congress to ban firearm purchases for the people in the Transportation Security Administration. The people of San Bernardino said that no gun laws or magazine limits could have stopped what happened, he was set on doing what he did and he could have used other weapons than a gun. People carrying guns could prevent some mass killings.

For example, in Pennsylvania an armed merchant prevented further killings by taking down the shooter during a high school shooting. Also a armed administrator stopped a high school shooting in Mississippi. Gun control would only be able to work if the government took every gun from every person and destroyed them. If law abiding citizens didn’t have to give up their guns to gun control laws in Hungerford, then the massacre that happened there may have been prevented if the public could have protected themselves.

Assault rifle sales were banned around the world, but they were not taken from owners so there is still about three million out there today. Banning the sale did not help get rid of them so what is the purpose if criminals can still have access to them? Because the government figured that it would prevent criminals from getting them, and the ones that had them would use them in a crime and when they got caught the gun would be seized leaving them only in the hands of law abiding citizens. The U. K. passed the second firearms act of 1997 banning handguns. Yet, the gun related crime rate went up by about one per one hundred thousand.

In the 2008 court case Columbia vs. Heller the court ruled that the constitution protects the right to own a gun for personal uses. On March 10, 2009, Michael McClendon shot and killed ten people in Germany. Therefore, gun control laws were passed. The next day a German high school student stole his dad’s gun and killed twelve people. Even after very strict gun laws were passed a mass killing took place. Chicago passed a law in 2010 forbidding the sale of guns in the city limits. There were 432 murders in 2010 and 500 in 2012 naming Chicago the murder capital after gun laws were passed.

In a 2010 court case the supreme court ruled the right to bear arms for the state and local level. The second amendment gives you the right to bear arms and yet over what criminals do the government wants to take away our rights. Law abiding citizens should not have to be punished for the actions of criminals. The fifth amendment protects the people from the government taking away their constitutional rights. The intent of the second amendment was to make sure a nation could never be overtaken by another country whether it’s foreign or domestic. Guns have always been used to kill things, including people, but that was for the reason of war.

Nowadays, people think murder is a game. Gun control is not going to help these problems because the people that commit murders have mental issues to want to do something like that so even without guns they will still find a way. Gun control laws take away the guns from the law abiding citizens, not the criminals, so then the criminals are armed and we are helpless which makes people easy targets with no way to fight back. This makes more people that has thought about doing a mass killing want to do it because they have an easier time and can kill more people before they get fought back against.

America isn’t quite as violent as it seems because some of the crime rates include people that shot criminals that were harming them or intruding their property or privacy and get charged for shooting the criminal. Which then makes the law abiding citizens look like criminals for trying to protect their things and families. Also it makes the state look bad because the crime rates go up because those cases have to be included and the crime rates go up past usual making the state look more violent than any other.

Criminals sometimes pay law abiding citizens to go buy a gun for them and they end up using it to commit a crime, then the criminals pin the crime on the good guy because the gun is then registered to him from him purchasing it. Prohibition never stopped the production and transportation of alcohol, it just made it a challenge and that’s pretty much what gun control is doing for the criminals. Even in gun free zones like Virginia tech guns still show up here and there.

Criminals don’t have to use guns to commit murder, they can use a knife or a grenade or nuclear weapons but the government is only looking at guns because they are used the most often because they make it easier to commit a murder or a robbery. Some people think that if more people in the world had guns there would be less violence because the criminals would be scared to mess with someone because they don’t know who has a gun that they will use against them and who doesn’t have a gun. Revolutionary working class people used to use guns not only for crime and protection, but to protect themselves from the violent ruling class of people.

Some countries rely on the state to protect them from criminals rather than the people of the country using self defense against the criminals. Guns protect the rights of people and guns helped the Colonist stand up and beat the British. Areas like Texas, where a lot of people carry concealed weapons the gun related crime rate is a lot lower than somewhere that just has guns for self defense. If the criminals could follow the laws then there wouldn’t need to be gun control there wouldn’t even be crimes at all.
