Refugee: A Narrative Fiction

“I love you! ” But by the time I looked back my mother was gone. I knew she was just trying to get me away from her when she said “go hide, let’s play hide and seek. ” A few minutes later I realized why she had me hide, there was a group of mean soldiers chasing her on massive, muscular horses, but I knew most of the horses the soldiers were riding, they used to be in my herd but they went missing, they used to be so beautiful and free now they are machines used to catch more wild horses. I ran and hid by a big pile of dead, soggy leaves.

Eventually, I came out from hiding a few hours later, now I was all alone in a big gloomy forest. I was cold, damp and covered with mud and leaves, all I heard was the crunch beneath my feet it was as quiet as a mouse. I found a dry spot covered with moss, it was already dark out and the fog didn’t help. The next thing I knew, I was fast asleep. The next day I woke up to crows crocking and a big dead tree above me, I’m surprised it didn’t fall on me while I was asleep. Next, I got up and started heading south, all I could smell was dead bark and rotting trees.

After a few minutes of walking I heard a sniffle behind me, I jumped around expecting to see a monster but I saw a … big grey mare laying on a pile of moss! Sadly it wasn’t my mother so I walked away, then she noticed me and said “Why are you lost? ” so I explained to her and she said “The soldiers are going around capturing innocent horses and using them in the army, but did you see a small black foal? ” I said “no” that’s when the mare broke down and started crying, I walked up to her and said “what’s wrong? ”

She lifted her sweaty head from the moss and said “my foal was just stolen from me. I gasped “I’m so sorry for your loss. ” The mare offered to take me to her herd down by the swamp, I said of course I would. We started to head down a big muddy slope it was so foggy I couldn’t see five feet away from me, the mare stayed so close to me and talked to me softly so I felt safe, she reminded me of my mother so much.

As we were talking I asked “So what’s your name? ” she responded softly “Nara is my name, what is yours? ” she responded softly “My name is Hero, I don’t know why my mom didn’t name me something else. I responded annoyed “I like that name, maybe you will be a hero when you get older. ” she said That ended our conversation until we got to the herd We got to the herd an hour later, it was dark out already. All I saw was mud, I wondered where I was going to sleep. I was so happy there was other foals, but they all look kind of mean. so, I went over and introduced myself. “Hi I’m Hero, what’s your name? ” I said sweetly, but as I said they looked mean… and acted mean too! “I don’t care what your name is, by the way Hero is a stupid name.

Who named you that; a crazy old gopher. ” Said the big muscular foal snottily. I was so surprised he said that so I just left. I went and found Nara she was talking to another horse about me and how she found me lost. All the horses here were black or dark grey, I was the only white foal, and I only have one black dot on the top of my head in between my ears. I was so different from the other horses, they were all big and muscular and I was small and dangly. A year later I left on a mission… I was going to find my mother. I said my good-byes to everyone.

Nara was like my mother and I was like her son, we had one thing in common … we both lost someone we loved on the same day and took care of each other, she was so sad when I left. A week after I left I met an old squirrel. I asked him questions about my mother and all he said was “I aint met no horse in years, only you. I aint even seen a horse. So I can’t help you but I know someone who can, all I can remember from her name is mare, something mare. Well you should go, I have to go find some nuts, it’s almost fall and I’m an old fat squirrel so I start early so I can be just fine this winter.

Bye! ” and he scurried off like a raccoon. I fell asleep that night beside a meadow under a big oak tree, it was so clear I could see every star. I woke up to a loud screech, in the tree. It was a big owl, I told him to leave me alone until the morning because I was so exhausted. The next morning he told me he didn’t want me to sleep under that tree because the field mice lived there. I apologized and I asked him about my mother and he said “I saw some big horses running through here a year ago but I didn’t follow them… but I know someone who can help.

One of the field mice were telling me about a magical mare who knows all the secrets of the forest but he didn’t tell me where to find her or her full name because I ate him. All I remember is mythical…mythical something” then he saw a little creature in the meadow and went to catch it. Later that day I met a little cricket I asked him questions about my mom and he said “I personally don’t know your mom. But the mythical mare does, you can find her in a field if you keep going north a few days. You will know who she is just by looking at her, she is so beautiful.

She will be in the yummiest field, well I have to get to my concert. Good luck! ” and he hopped off. As soon as he left I ran as fast as I could, he said it would take a few days I got there in 2 hours. When I got there it was so beautiful it looked like my best dreams. And the cricket was right I could definitely tell who the mythical mare was… she was in the middle of the field she was as gold as treasure and had piercing blue eyes.

I slowly walked toward her she was facing the opposite way but before I even got to her she said peacefully Hello Hero, I know why you’re here. Sadly, your mother has passed away a few months ago from poor treatment. I know you worked hard to get here but you must leave. Nara is basically your mother, and she misses you so much. She loves you like a mother loves her child. But she is fatally sick from depression. And has hours of life left to live… I know you are exhausted but you must find the strength deep within your heart to keep going. Your mother is always in your heart. Goodbye and good luck! ”

I already felt like I was going to collapse but I ran as fast as I could. 0 minutes later I ran straight by the crickets concert and yelled “Thank you”, then 30 minutes later I ran by the owl and he knew what I was going to say without me even saying it and he screeched “your welcome! ” and flew above me for a couple minutes, I ran by the squirrel and whinnied “thank you” while he was eating a nut. An hour I started slowing down my throat was swollen, my legs were aching, and I was wheezing so loud you could hear me a mile away. But as I was walking I heard a heartbeat and it was slowing down by every second, I knew it was Naras heartbeat.

I ran as fast as I could and got there in 2 minutes. She was barely alive, she opened her eyes just in time and saw me. Her heart beat started getting faster every second. A day later, I was the leader of the heard and had a bravery award. That night I looked up and I swear I saw my mother running across the stars…I knew she was proud of me. But as I looking up to see her again, Nara wobbled up to me I jumped up to help her and as I got to her she said…. “You really did turn out to be a hero”
