Do you ever find it hard to figure out where they are hiring ? or finding a job that suits your needs? if you answered “yes” to either of these questions, there is a skill called “networking”. So, you must now be asking yourself what is networking? As it states in a website called definitions. net, networking means “To take steps to make and cultivate the acquaintance of people who can be helpful to oneself, especially in finding new employment, advancing to a higher position in one’s occupation, or exchanging information. (GCIDE,5).
This skill can be a very easy way to find a job, networking can be done either by face to face, gatherings, or contact methods such as email, phone, social and/or business networking websites. The gatherings can take place at a bar, restaurant, club or even the library. This is not a way to meet a new friend or a mate. People will give you their numbers to be in contact for business purposes only! The moment you try to get in contact with someone emotionally, there is no returning back.
You will not be allowed to socialize or be a part of the networking system again. In the last few days, I’ve tried to network with my classmates from Montgomery College. I was introduced to some amazing people that will help me get further in life and who inspired me to keep on reaching for my goal, to become successful. These people were Ms. Rahmatu, Ms. Dienis, and Ms. Stephanie. These three ladies had such extraordinary goals which amazed me in so many ways. Ms.
Rahmatu currently volunteers at Shady Grove Hospital and has been going to Montgomery College for two years and is planning to transfer to the Universities at Shady Grove. Her major is nursing and she has already been taking the science courses she needs in order to transfer. Such as, Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy I and II. I found out that we both had taken the same professor for biology, Dr. Hoberman. We agreed how much of an amazing professor she was. I passed that class with a “C” and she passed with an “A”.
I am currently enrolled in Microbiology and I need to pass that class with a solid “A”. Since, Rahmatu has already taken Microbiology and both of her Anatomy courses she has recommended that I record my professor lectures, listen to the recording and take notes. She told me that should really help me do well in those courses. She also recommended me to take Anatomy I and II with professor Victoria Schneider and that she would let me borrow her books once I get into those course. Rahmatu Strongest subject is science while her weakest is english.
My strongest subject is science while h strongest subject is english while my weakest is science. Given the coincidence that our weakest and strongest subjects are the opposite, we agreed that we will both help/tutor each other whenever we need so. On the other hand, Ms. Dienis has been going to MC for two years and wants to transfer to either the University of Maryland, Baltimore, Towson or out of state to countie her major of nursing. She is planning to exceed her degree with a PhD. I asked her why she wanted to be a nurse?
Her very own words were “What inspired me to do nursing was when my brother wasn’t breathing one day.. and my dad found him in the bed and he was so pale… So we rushed him to the hospital and I was like 12 so the nurse saw me crying and she came next to me to comfort me and the other nurses were always checking on my brother. Thats when I knew I wanted to help other people.. I always liked helping others”. (Dienis Q). Ever since that day that’s when she knew that she wanted to become a pediatric nurse.
She started off as a volunteer at Holy Cross Hospital and is now a front desk receptionist. Lastly, Ms. Stephanie also wants to become a pediatric nurse and has been going to Montgomery College for two years as well. Planning on transferring to the University of Maryland, Baltimore at The Universities of Shady Grove. To finish her major of nursing with a Bachelor’s degree. Ms. Stephanie has always wanted to be a part of the medical field since she was young and she absolutely loves working with children from all ages.
She did have some concerns about choosing this major which was, working the long night hour shifts and dealing with patient who are in severe pain and not being able to help that person. Even though she was worried about that, she told herself that she would be strong enough to look past that and was encouraged to help people out the best she can. In Conclusion, these three ladies definitely had so many different views towards becoming a nurse. The fact that, all four of us are going toward the same goal we will be able to help each other throughout the process of graduating / transferring with an associate degree.
We will also be able to transfer to the same university since all of us are planning on going to the same one. Hearing that two out of the three ladies both volunteer at a hospital has made me realize that maybe it would be a good step to take, to either volunteer or shadow a nurse to see if | actually enjoy the medical field of a nurse. This is why networking is an great way of getting connects to different types of ideas and being able to talk to someone who is heading towards the same careers to help you take another step further.
