The Support of U. S. Gun Rights Rough Draft When a six foot four, 300 pound man breaks into a young woman’s house, she stands no chance. On the other hand, if that girl is waiting on the other side of the door with a . 44 magnum revolver, then a different story can be told. Gun rights date way back to the American Revolutionary War days. Every owner of the household was required to own a gun even women. Men were also ordered to carry a gun to church and public meetings to protect their families from threats or foreign invaders.
Although many are trying to enforce gun control, we should keep our rights to bear arms because of self-defense and the support of our second amendment. There are many groups in America who Believe that gun ownership is a dangerous and unnecessary right that should be taken away. They believe that if we had gun control laws, that it would make for a much safer environment. That it could have prevented mass violence such as the Orlando, Sandy Hook, and San Bernardino shootings from happening (“Gun Rights” 1).
They also believe that homicides and accidental shootings would be eliminated and make our communities a much safer place to live in (“Gun Control” 2). The belief for the increase on gun control would cause less violence is a big topic that the pro gun control party supports. Due to the fact that these supporters truly believe that gun deaths are the leading deaths in America today, they are highly against people in communities owning guns.
Gun control opponents arguments is that, “most mass shootings occur in gun free-zones such as schools and offices that embolden would-be killers because they know no one will be able to shoot back” (“How” 2). Gun control supporters are striving to pass advanced background checks so that high-risk people, criminals, or terrorists would keep guns out of their hands (“Gun” 1). A federal law was passed that banned machine guns and sawed off shotguns from being used (“Gun” 1). After all of the mass shootings, they have came to a conclusion that machine guns are a big factor due to the causes of mass deaths in single shootings.
Instead of just killing one or two victims, these criminals are able to overpower them greatly with machine guns that end up killing up to fifteen people due to the fact of how powerful these guns really are. Along with many other beliefs, gun control supporters believe that guns in the use of crime is more likely to report in a person’s death (“Gun” 1). Assault rifles along with the machine guns and sawed off shotguns, are also used in mass shootings that leave several people dead at the scene (“How” 2).
The only difference that makes the assault rifle stand out, is that it has power like a shotgun and exit velocity similar to a machine gun. Assault rifles can be used as automatic or semi-automatic and are very powerful which is why our military uses these guns when fighting in modern day wars. The FBI also did a study that proved that over 9,000 people per year are killed by a firearm (“Gucciardi” 1). The gun control support states that the 2nd amendment was intended for militia purposes only(“Background” 1). The pro gun right party disagrees though. We believe that guns are needed for self defense purposes.
Taking away gun rights would be unconstitutional and would violate the bill of rights that gave Americans these rights as individuals. It is also proven that owning a gun decreases the crime rather than increasing it (“Gucciardi” 8). Not everyone who owns a guns intentions are to kill someone. Many own a gun for hunting purposes only. Guns are put out to be such a bad thing nowadays because of society. Many believe that guns kill people. The truth is, is that people kill people. In fact, “clubs, hammers, and other blunt objects totaled 611 deaths in 2008, 263 more than rifles.
Hands, fists, and feet killed 801 people in 2009, 453 more than rifles” (“Gucciardi” 3). Many agree that you should have every right when protecting your life from danger. Self defense is one of the most important rights that a person could ever have. If someone is threatening to take your life, you should have the right to defend your life in any way, shape, or form. For example, majority of men in this world outmatch women in strength so if a powerful man breaks into a woman’s house she should be able to have a gun to defend herself.
It’s only fair, because she can’t overpower the man with her strength alone but if she has a gun, there is a good chance that man takes respect for that women and leaves her alone. In a digital-dial survey it is shown that firearms are used more often to intimidate intruders instead of the use for violence. Studies show that both the intruder and the victim usually walk away from the incident completely unharmed (“Harvard” 2). If the intruder is shot, he or she usually checks into a local hospital for a gun wound injury and usually are caught by police from there (“Harvard” 4).
To own a gun in your possession for self defense could save your life. Statistically, 162,000 people are saved by using a firearm per year(“Gucciardi” 8). This includes burglaries, home invasions, death threats, etc. Studies also show that 34% of inmates were scared off, shot at, or wounded by a self-defense armed victim (“Gucciardi” 7). This percentage would only go up if everyone owned a gun at their house. This would more likely help protect their house and families from danger, due to the fact of them having a strong line of defense.
If an intruder planned to break into a house knowing that family owns a gun, his perspective would more than likely change because of the respect of self defense. To have the most powerful right of self-defense would be to get your concealed carrying license. This privilege gives you the right to carry a weapon outside of your home legally. “The Second Amendment refers to “the right of the people” (not the state) as a pre-existing right that government must respect” (“Patriots” 2). Statistics show that 96% of murders in Chicago were used by handguns with the intent to kill (“Gucciardi 6”).
This percentage would decrease dramatically if everyone had their concealed carry license. Reasons being, if a gunfight broke out in the middle of public and a gunman started shooting multiple people, chances are one of the victims the gunman was shooting for could draw their weapon and shoot him or her down. When a person takes their concealed to carry class, they are taught that when in danger for your life you shoot to kill. If your life is truly in danger and a man or woman draws a weapon and threatens your life, killing them with your weapon is completely legal.
The previous information is proven to be true, because in Texas when the enactment of the right-to-carry law was allowed crime fell 30%. Texas and the United State’s murder rate fell 28% lower than average (“Gucciardi” 6). Many supporters of our 2nd amendment believe that we should have the right to bear all arms. The 2nd amendment is a right to all Americans and shall not be infringed. The Second Amendment protects a fundamental right and should be read broadly because it implements the right of self-defense. Selfdefense is the ultimate right of all individuals to preserve life.
The rights to a free press, free speech, assembly, and religion are extremely important, but none of them matter very much if you can’t defend your own life against aggression. None of them matter very much when an evil government is fully armed and its citizens are disarmed (“Patriots” 2). It is stated in the Declaration of Independence that some rights are unchallengeable and the 2nd amendment is one of them (“Self-” 3). Gun rights date back to the 1700’s for self-defense and hunting purposes (“Background” 1). Back in the day almost every household owned a gun.
The men owned guns primarily for hunting and the women had one at the house in case of intruders. They even brought guns to church with them just in case anything were to happen the men could protect him and his family from any harm. The 2nd amendment also allows us to have a well-rounded militia. The Second Amendment begins with the phrase, “A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State” (“Patriots” 3). If our own government turns on us we have the right to use self-defense (“Stephens” 2). We would also be more protected from illegals that come into this country such as terrorist (“How” 2).
Incidents such as the Orlando shooting that went on this past year could have been been prevented from such a mass shooting if our country was as well armed as we should be. The 2nd amendment upholds our laws. It gives us the right to life, liberty, and protection (“Stephens” 2). Our founding fathers Alexander Hamilton and James Madison uphold this amendment by supporting gun rights (“Stephens” 3). Our founding fathers hold a great tribute to this country and nothing should be taken away from their works of passing the bill of rights which supports our first 10 amendments to the Constitution.
The 2nd amendment is what makes our country so strong. It gives us individual rights (“Stephens” 4) These rights are what make our country so great. To have the freedom of speech, religion, movement, and many other rights is what attracts millions of outsiders into our country. Not only does it maintain our life, but also our liberty, and pursuit of happiness. (“Stephens” 4) By keeping the rights to bear arms, our rights to our second amendment, and our rights as humans are supported.
This is what makes the United States of America so unique. Instead of our government running everything that goes on in our country, we the people have our own individual rights to make for a much more enjoyable life. Not only do millions of Americans agree and fight for these rights, but these rights can help keep us safe from any violence, crime, and government tyranny that may interfere. The U. S. Gun Rights should live on forever that way America can always be the free and constitutional country it has always been.
