Singular

ngular number and thus the circumstance that an object occurs only once. In German, a distinction is made between singular (singular) and plural (plural). The singular is the more frequent number in the language usage (example for the number: singular: a dog, plural: the dogs).

term
The term is derived from the Latin singulus, which can be translated individually with Sg. According to this, the translation already refers to the fundamental point: namely, that an object is present only once, and not once more. Let’s look at an example.

Peter has a dog. Jonas has several dogs.
In the above example we find both the singular and the plural form of the noun dog. In the first movement, we are concerned with the singularity. Because Peter has exactly one dog. This is indicated by the article one and by the noun itself, since it has no plural ending.

The second sentence contains the plural form of the word, for Jonas owns several dogs. This is indicated by the accompanying word several as well as by the plural ending -e. It is therefore not just a dog, but a multiple. How many dogs it is, is not defined by a number (number). That it is more than a dog, however, is evident.

Number: Singular and plural determine the word form and the companions of the noun

Short overview: The most important thing about the singular at a glance
German has two forms: singular and plural. The singular is called the singular, the plural is the plural. Einzahl means that one thing is actually meant only once, there are several of this kind, we are dealing with the majority.
Almost every noun can be in the singular and plural. Here the plural form can be formed from the singular form. In some cases, however, the term is the same (eg the girl → the girl, the teacher → the teacher).
Exceptions are singularity and pluralism. This is used to denote words which occur only in the one or the plurality. A transformation is therefore not possible.
