Sheldon Silverstein wrote many great poems, so I decided to analyze two of best: ‘A Light in the Attic’ and Where the Sidewalk Ends’. These poems are one of the biggest icons in children’s literature and made Silverstein one of the most recognized children’s authors in history. Also, these two poems have been considered best-sellers for New York Times in multiple years. Both of these poems have changed the face of children’s literature in many ways. ‘A Light in the Attic’ seems like a poem that is just, ‘random’, something that doesn’t have any meaning to it. Even though this is a small poem, it has a very truthful and outgoing meaning.
The main idea of this poem is to explain that young people do think about more than just themselves. They think about serious problems that are occurring or that will occur in their lives such as death, war, and how their own lives will change over time. This poem also explains how young people think about the real world. ‘A Light in the Attic’ uses the literary element, imagery, to explain the theme by inserting a mental picture of idea in the reader’s mind. Without the use of imagery in this poem, it would be very difficult to understand the theme. Silverstein wrote this poem in a very unique way.
This oem explained to everyone the thoughts of young people and their perspective of the real world. Where the Sidewalk Ends’ is an interesting poem about the lives of children. This poem also is about a world better than the world adults live in: a child’s world. Children don’t have to work, pay bills, and they don’t have anyone to take care of, like adult’s. The theme of this poem is that adults should learn to act more like children, not try to avoid being like them. Children seem like they are free from the world. Even though there are problems going on in their lives, children act like they’re not even there, they just enjoy life itself.
Silverstein is trying to tell adults not to worry about the problems of the world as much, but to enjoy life like children, to be free. An important literary element used in this poem is symbolism. Silverstein uses symbolism to explain the setting of the poem to the reader. The use of symbolism enhances the theme by showing in detail the majestic world that the children are in, compared to the polluted and dark world of the adults. In conclusion, Silverstein wanted all adults to free themselves from the real world and, like children, enjoy life. Both ‘A Light in the Attic’ and ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ have a lot of things in common.
First, both themes of these poems are about children’s thoughts and their way of life. Also, they both include the ways adults think of children. Both of these poems involve happiness and sadness of some sort between adults and children. Lastly, both of these poems explain to the world that children can help impact the way of adults in a positive way by not stressing out over problems and to show that adults are not the only ones with troubles in their lives. Both of these poems are truly amazing with the impact they about a child’s and an adult’s life. They represent the thoughts and lives of adults and children.
Silverstein convinced people with these two poems that the world of an adult and a child are different, but it would be better if these two types of lives were more similar. In conclusion, these two poems are a great way of showing people that a child can think the thoughts of an adult and can teach an adult to relax and have fun in life. Book Cook Jacob Gailey Once there was a guy He loved all types of food But his favorite was brownies Cooking Brownies put him in a great mood Brownies was his relaxation from life He liked cooking them instead of eating He would sell brownies then buy brownie mix Everyone loved his food feeding
He soon became famous, aye! Everyone knew where to look The best cook around The one and only Book Cook He had so much money he didn’t know what to buy I mean c’mon dude You have to buy something After awhile his brownies became crude No one would eat his brownies not even mice His cooking and body was taking a beating His brownies were like bricks Poor Book, his cooking career is ceding All he did was cook brownies everyday Everyone will remember Book Cook the legend Right now he is home bound As Book Cook’s cooking days have come to an end My poem, ‘Book Cook’ is like Shel Silverstein’s poems in many ways.
Silverstein’s have odd titles and characters, but the meanings of them are very deep and true. Silverstein’s poems also had a unique rhyme scheme, different from other types of poems. ‘Book Cook’ is similar to Silverstein’s poems in different ways. The rhyme scheme of this poem is very similar to many of Silverstein’s poems such as ‘Captain Hook’. Also, the titles of some of his poems are reversed such as ‘Runny Babbit instead of bunny rabbit. ‘Book Cook’ is the title instead of cook book.
Most of Silverstein’s poems are much shorter than the poem I created, but Silverstein’s poems and ‘Book Cook’ both have the ame concept when it comes to the length of the poems and rhyme schemes. l doubled the length of the original rhyme scheme to make the poem more meaningful and interesting. The theme of ‘Book Cook’ is to not waste all of your life on one specific thing, it will make your life horrific in the end. Explore different things and find new interests in life.
Silverstein’s morales in his poems were reflected upon major events occurring in the Contemporary time period such as war and riots, but also innovation. Like ‘Book Cook’, Silverstein’s poems had meanings about life struggles and achievements during the Contemporary time period. Silverstein was a genius when it comes when it comes to creating morales in odd poems for all ages to understand. Silverstein’s poems explained to people what are the troubles of a child’s and an adult’s life.
Silverstein intrigued many people with his writings about the troubles of the world. ‘Book Cook’ has a moral explaining to people that the world has many opportunities to explore, take in more than one interest. ‘Book Cook’ is my way of recreating the ways of Silverstein. In conclusion, Silverstein is a great children’s author with many amazing morales on his poems and “Book Cook’ is my way of howing everyone the type of literature that Sheldon Allan Silverstein represented for children’s works during the Contemporary time period.
Sheldon Allan Silverstein is one of the greatest literature icons in history. He changed the way of children’s literature, songwriting, and literature in general. Even though he had a tough life, Silverstein proved that he was stronger than the world and he believed that anyone and everyone can overcome the world’s problems. In conclusion, Sheldon Silverstein is arguably the greatest composer in history, as he strived for world peace and prevention of the troubles of the world.
