Success can only be accomplished with practice, without practice nothing is accomplished. In the end there is either winning or losing, your preparation will determine the outcome. Princess Alyss Heart lives in Wonderland, but her evil aunt, Queen Redd, has made it very hard for anyone to live there. Her mother, Queen Genevieve, Redd’s sister, has loved Redd deep on the inside, but has not wanted to put her daughter at risk. So there was a separation between imaginations, there was good and bad.
Redd had ruled Black Imagination, the bad of course, and Queen Genevieve ruled White Imagination, the good. What will happen if Alyss meets Redd? In the beginning of the novel, Alyss is characterized as puerile, impatient, and guideless. “He’s late, he promised he’d be here. I do not understand why he had to make a trip so close to my birthday” (Beddor 13). Instead of being patient, waiting to see her father when he comes home and enjoying all the time she’s able to get with him, she prefers acting spoiled and insisting he be home right now.
When Bibwit Harte says, “… only the caterpillars know,” it is as if he is saying only students who know what they’re doing, should be able to finish the looking glass maze, which meant Alyss knew not when or how to control her imagination and he didn’t believe in her. “But it wouldn’t matter even if they were alive, because I’ll never make it home” (Beddor 102). Alyss is giving up on trying to find Wonderland, and she is only 7, so she has no idea where she is or how to get back home.
When Alss says, “I’ll never make it home,” she does not know where to look for Wonderland. She is going to have to learn how to live on her own for now and once she does she has to find Wonderland and fight Redd. “I have to think of something. Why can’t I make the flower sing? Because my imagination was nothing special after all, that’s why” (Beddor 115). Alyss wonders why her imagination was not working.
She is alone and maybe using her imagination to get food would help her, but their weakening without practice. The Liddell’s were so taken with her appearance that they failed to realize it was the first time she had ever called them by those intimate of endearments: Mother and Father” (Beddor 151). The Liddell’s are in the awe by Alyss’ appearance and behavior. The author is saying that Alyss has never acted this way in front of her parents; grown up. When Alyss refers to them as, “Yes mother” and “Thank you father” it is as if she accepts the fact she’s stuck with them and takes it into a liking. The Liddell’s seemed to be happy that she’s growing fond of them. “Marriage?
Again, she felt the tug of a long-buried affection for who… she would not allow herself to think of him. She had to be realistic” (Beddor 171). Alyss just got asked to be married by Prince Leopold. When Alyss said, “I accept, Leopold” Alyss is saying she accepts the marriage and realizes it is not fair for Leopold, but for her mother. “Where are we going? she breathed. You’ll see! ” (Beddor 205). Dodge just took Alyss from her wedding, escaping the Cat, but Alyss not sure it is Dodge. When Dodge says, “You’ll see! ” Alyss starts thinking about Wonderland, if he is taking her back their.
They have their hands clasped, but going into the portal they lose each other’s hand. Will she lose Dodge, again? “… Alyss must meet with the caterpillars” (Beddor 224). For Alyss to find the maze she must ask the caterpillars, where it is. Bibwit Harte says, “Only caterpillars know the location of the maze” what if Redd kills them before they can get to the caterpillars? Alyss has to finish the maze and Redd. “I don’t care about any maze or about Redd or the Heart crystal! I want us all to be together again! I want my family back! I WANT MY FAMILY BACK! (Beddor 302). Alyss, at this point, is very confused and just wants to give up, but she can’t let her parents and people down or to die. When Alyss said, “I want us all to be together again! ” she gets fired and has vengeance about her parents’ death. She is lost in the maze and needs to stop illustrating before Redd beats her to the sceptor. “I’d rather be disowned by them than seen them murdered” (Beddor 339). Alyss has come face-to-face with Redd, they’ve only talked, but Alyss may make Redd see Alyss’ side and understand what she’s going through.
Redd explains she was disowned by her parents, if Alyss can get to her through “family” and a more emotional talk she may not fight Redd. Redd may get a soul! In conclusion, Alyss does fight Redd, but not the type of war-fight just she and Redd and their imaginations. Alyss talked down Redd saying “I killed you” when she didn’t, but it had made her easier to fight with. Alyss won and became queen, Redd gone, Molly as a guardsmen, Hatter taking a temporary leave, Bibwit still teaching Alyss things she will not know along her road ahead for queen.
Dodge is still in Wonderland, but not with Alyss, she still loves him and he still loves her, maybe just not forever or at least he wants to get to know the new and matured, grown-up Alyss. Alyss and Leopold still had a sympathy for each other, he had gotten remarried to a queen and named their child Alice, if she has a child he would be named Leopold. Alyss queen of Wonderland, is starting fresh without Black Imagination, for good! Alyss was characterized as puerile, impatient, and guideless, and she has turned into a strong, independent, and beautiful young woman.
