takes courage to know what you think is right and how you act upon it. Throughout the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D Taylor uses Cassie Logan as an example of a courageous 9 year old girl that stands up for her convictions and putting aside many problems against her and her family. Cassie shows her courage by standing up for Little Man, by standing up to Mr. Barnett in the store, and when she faces her rival Lillian Jean. Cassie proves that she is a girl who stands up for what she thinks is right but then realizes that everyone is not the same.
She shows everyone that she is willing to face the consequences hat come with standing up for her convictions and what she believes is right. Are you brave enough to stand up for what you think is right and maybe even a sibling? Cassie was not afraid to stand up for herself and others even when she knew it would get her in trouble. This event is at the beginning of the book Cassie gets the school and they get new books but Little Man does not want them because they’re dirty and the pages were worn and all torn up so little man starts to stop and throw the book down.
The teacher Miz Crocker got furious and called their mama during her lunch but “At least she didn’t have a antrum and stomp all over hers. I tell you Marry I just don’t know what got into these children today I always knew Cassie was rather high strung but little man! He’s always such a perfect little gentleman. “(Taylor 28) “You say Cassie said it was because of this front page that she and Little Man didn’t want the books? ” (Taylor 28) said Mama asked quietly.
Mama just glanced at the books at the front covers she saw how furious they probably were and she took the books that they got and started to glue pages on the chart so they could not see it. Then mama told Mrs. Crocker that she would not like to see that every time he opened her book. Miz Crocker was surprised she had done that and said she had gave them a good whippin and that she had the right to. Mama agreed but they did do the right thing. This shows that Cassie was courageous enough to stand up to Miz Crocker. She was willing to get punished and get in trouble with her Mama.
But sometimes standing up for what you think is the right way to go even if it’s not and you get in trouble. Have you ever felt like you were being treated unfairly? , well Cassi did and she did something about it. When Big Ma took Cassie, Stacey, and T. J. to Strawberry T. J. had to get some roceries so they were in the wagon and were waiting for Big Ma to get back from her meeting but T. J. wanted to go into the store at that moment but Big Ma said “Y’all wait here for me and soon’s I get back we’ll go do that shoppin’ so’s we can get on home ‘fore it gets dark. (Taylor 107) then after several minutes of watching farmers in faded overalls and their women in flour- sack-cut-dresses prom ending under the verandas, T. J. said ” Why don’t we go on down to the mercantile and look around. “(Taylor 107) but Stacey did not want to because Big Ma told them to stay there and that she wanted to go with them to. Ah, shoot, man, we’ll be doin’ her a favor. We go on down to the mercantile now and order up our stuff, we’ll save her some time so when she come from seein’ that lawyer we can jus’ go on home.
Besides I got somethin’ to show ya. “(Taylor 107) Stacey was not sure that was a good idea but he finally said “ok” when they got inside T. J. showed them what he was talking about, it was a pearl handled pistol T. J. said he wanted it for protection but they thought is was silly. Then they went up to order their items the cashier Mr. Barnett took T. J. ‘s long list he was serving all the other customers that were white Cassie did not approve f this situation so she asked why he was serving all those white people and that T. J. as in line before them and he told Cassie that he was just doing his job and that white people get served first and to wait over there but a couple people later she got up again and told the man that they needed their groceries and that they have been waiting a long time so Mr. Barnett yelled out “Whose little nigger is this? “(Taylor CH 5) Cassie did not like that so she tries to object but Mr. Barnett makes Stacey take Cassie outside the store leaving T. J. by himself. Even though Cassie and the others were being treated unfairly she still stood p for what she thought was right and it was wrong but she still did it anyway.
A painful tear slid down my cheek and my lips trembled, I’m sorry.. M-Miz. Lillian Jean. ” was what Cassie said when she faced her arch nemesis Lillian Jean. Cassie dreaded saying those words when the one day she bumped into Lillian Jean when she was kicked out of the store. “Why don’t you look where you’re going? “(Taylor 113) Lillian Jean said huffily. Then Jermy saw Cassie and they said “hello” as Lillian Jean was staring at Cassie she was still not letting it go and was now ordering Cassie to apologize. A few moments later Lillian Jean’s father Mr. Simms come over and told Cassie to get out of his little girl’s way and to apologize.
Then he grabbed Cassie’s arm and threw her out in the road. After, Big Ma came out from her business and saw what was happening she walked over grabbing Cassie as she tried running and Big Ma was trying to get the kids and leave but Mr. Simms said ” Not ‘fore she ‘pologizes to my gall y’all ain’t. “(Taylor 115) So Big Ma told Cassie to apologize, but Jermy tried to defend her by saying she did but that didn’t work so Cassie told Miz Lillian Jean Sorry and ran to the wagon and cried. Cassie was not happy with Big Ma but she did face her ival but did get pushed down on the other hand she did have the courage to tell Lillian Jean she was sorry.
Cassie is a courageous character it takes lots of courage to stand up to your teacher that hates you just so your sibling does not get in trouble alone, also she had a lot of courage when standing up to Mr. Barnett and getting kicked out just because you didn’t know that whites got served first, and lastly standing up to your rival and enemy that is white when your black and she thinks just because she is white she can boss Cassie around like she’s a nobody. That is why Cassie is a courageous 9 year old girl.
