Pentalogie (Fünfteiler)

A pseudonym, also a five-part work, is an artistic work, which consists of five individual parts, which together belong together. Pentalogy is mostly a literary, musical or cinematic work, the term sometimes being transferred to other areas and then being able to designate any kind of artistic five-part. What is essential for the pentalogy is that their parts, although they are cohesive in content, but usually function independently. This means that the action of the individual works is mostly self-contained and thus comprehensible without the knowledge of other parts (see Mehrteiler). The term is often referred to the literature – often prose works – or the film.

The term is derived from the Greek noun pentalogía, which is composed of the prefix penta for five and the noun logos for word. Accordingly, pentalogy is literally a five-word, and only in a transposed sense, a content consisting of five parts.

This “rule” also applies to the other designations of multipliers. The correct term always consists of the Greek prefix for the respective number word and the unit logie – derived from the noun logos. Consequently, the dilogy is a second, the trilogy is a three-pronged, the tetralogy a four-part, and the hexalogy is a six-part, etc. The designation of different multipartes

For the first time there were such divisions in Greek antiquity. Thus in the 5th century BC, The Great Dionysia in honor of the god Dionysus. To this festival, a contest of tragedy poets was held. Each of the three poets, who was allowed to participate in this annual show, presented three related works, which were called a trilogy. Later, they were extended to include a satyr play and thus a tetralogy.

Nowadays these terms are of course no longer reserved for drama, and it is customary to describe all the products of art, which consist of several parts and relate to one another, with one of the above concepts. In everyday life, however, we are mainly confronted with the second and the trilogy and tetralogy, where the pentalogy (five-part), hexalogy (six-part), heptalogy (even divisors) or even ikosalogy (twentieths) are unknown and unusual.
