Miniseries

A multipart is a work, which consists of at least two parts, which belong together in content. This can be a cinematic, musical or literary work, whereby the term is usually referred to as films or extensive prose works (eg novels). The individual works of such a multicomponent are, in fact, together in content, but generally function independently. The action of the individual parts is thus self-contained and rarely interrupted by strong cliffhangers.

The term multi-part is, however, unusual. In most cases, the number of the related works is named directly, which is why names such as the second, the third, the four-part, or the corresponding equivalents of the dilogy, the trilogy and the tetralogy are more widespread. In the literary context, the concept cycle is also widespread (eg romance cycle) in order to characterize a content-related series. The most frequent representatives are probably cycles consisting of three parts, ie trilogies.

The designation of different multipartners
Multipart in the literature
Such multipartists have already been documented in the literature since antiquity, although in the beginning they were usually three tragedies from the same circle of myths (see myth). At times, these three-lobes were extended by a relaxing after-play (satyr play) and thus developed into tetralogy.

Such tetralogies, since the 5th century BC, The decisive tragic agon (competition) of the Great Dionysia. Several poets competed against each other and presented their works to the audience. These parts were arranged in one day and built up on one another, which is why the material connection is very narrow, as in the Orestee (458 BC) by the poet Aischylos.

Later on, for instance, in the works of Euripides and Sophocles, the individual parts of such cycles were still connected with one another in terms of content, but they offered an enormous concentration of the action, which is why the individual pieces can be assessed as independent. However, this condensation of the action, due to its enormous content, almost broke the scope of Dionysia.

The division of dramatic substances was also common in later epochs. A well-known example from the literature is, for example, Friedrich Schiller’s Wallenstein, which was created as a trilogy in order to loosen up the extensive material. The individual works of the multiplier are, however, self-employed. It is essential, therefore, for such dramatic multipartes that they are mostly used to loosen the length of the material in order not to lose the attention of the audience during the performance.

In the 21st century, however, such multipartisans are also common in epic literature, and they determine large parts of fiction. Recent examples are the dystopian romance novel The Tribute of Panem by Suzanne Collins and the popular fantasy novel series Harry Potter by the author Joanne K. Rowling, which consists of seven parts (heptalogy). As a lyrical multipartist, for example, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s trilogy of passion or even Josef Weinheber’s heroic trilogy.

Multipart in the film
There are also several parts in the film. In contrast to the dramas of antiquity, films are usually not planned in advance, but are supplemented by additional parts in financial success. Exceptions are only a few examples and of course all adaptations of literary works.

It is, however, necessary to distinguish between television and cinema films that have several parts, and (television) series. Television series are always part of a season, which usually has between six and thirty individual episodes. If the season is successful, the next will be produced. TV series are therefore already planned in advance as multi-part episodes and films are usually not.

Partially, film extensions also have a quite bland flavor, since the maximization of profits is very often in the foreground. Especially in the case of recent literary film adaptations, individual parts were sometimes strongly stretched and narrow strings of action extended to several Kinofilme.

Note: The above overview of the multipart types in the language usage
The descriptions given for the respective multi-divider types are correct and can also be used theoretically. Usually, however, only the terms second-line, trilogy and tetralogy are used, whereas all multipartes, which are characterized by even more works, are rarely precisely named in practice.
