A tribute is an event, a performance or a work that honors or honors a person. As a rule, a tribute to a corypha or an artist or his oeuvre, that is to say, the entire artistic work, applies. The homage is, therefore, itself an (artistic) work designed to honor a personality or for something that was especially inspiring for one’s own work.
term
The term is derived from the French noun tommage, which can be translated with appreciation, reverence or even appreciation. Thus the translation of the term points to the importance: it is about honoring the work of a (often artistic) person. This is usually done by the reference.
Such a reference is often placed in a work, thereby honoring the work of another. This can work, for example, in that a characteristic that is very typical for another artist is picked up or clearly referenced, perhaps by name, to the works of another. Furthermore, a work of art can be conceived as a homage.
At the same time, art-makers usually use the allusion (allusion) as well as the imitation (imitation, imitation). In the music the homage can be created by a composition, a tribute album as well as a sample. For example, the Homage to Paderewski can be cited. After Paderewski’s death, a Polish pianist, Soloklavierstücke was made by 16 well-known composers, who reminded the artist and stylistically referred to his work. An example:
He had drunk only a glass of wine.
“Emilia Galotti” lay on the desk.
The above example is taken from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Werther. Werther, shortly before his death, reads Emilia Galotti, the emperor’s grief, by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Although the act has a symbolic character in Werther’s work, the naming of the work as a tribute to Lessing is still to be understood.
Hommage in the Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, the term was understood to mean the ceremony in which a vassal (Lord, who volunteered as a follower in the service of another free lord) declared loyalty to his feudal lord and symbolically confirmed and confirmed the veto contract.
The vassal vowed that he was still a man of the other (French man). Such treaties were also concluded between knights and lords and usually sealed by the Church. This was considered to be trustworthy, and therefore often occurred as the leader of the ceremony.
The last ceremony took place on the 6th of February, 1952, when Elizabeth II was placed on the throne. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh) and the Dukes and other members of the House, gave their fief to the Emperor Royalty.
Short overview: The most important part of the term at a glance
A tribute is an event, a performance or a work that is to honor or honor a person. This can either be done through references from the work or the work is as a whole is tribute.
There is such respect and appreciation in art in almost all areas. This is often done by imitating typical elements or by allusions.
In the Middle Ages, the term was a solemn ceremony, in which a vassal assured his lordship of loyalty, and thus publicly announced that he would stand up for his lord and confirm the vowel contract. This happened among witnesses.
