Argyles Theory towards Communication Argyles theory contains six stages that brake down the way people communicate. This makes it easier for people to understand who they are communicating with, as one of the stages allows you to think before you speak. So you can communicate in the appropriate manner to suit an individual’s needs. (Moonie, N, 2010). Argyle had 2 key aims that he felt were very important:
1. Communication was a skill that could be learned and developed. 2. Communication is a cycle process that goes round and is repeated. Moonie, N, 2010). Argyle cycle consist of six stages: . The first is where an idea occurs when we think about what to say to someone and who we say it too. 2. Message code and when we plan to say it. 3. The third stage is all about when we transmit and deliver the message. 4. This stage is when the message is received and when the other person hears what you say. 5. This stage is when the message is decoded this when the person you are talking too translates what you have said in a different language to meet the needs of the person.
6. The final stage is when the message has being understood and the other person can nderstand the meaning of the message (Moonie, N, 2010) A real life health and care example of argyles theory is a paediatric nurse. The first stage will occur by a nurse called Jenny has to think about what she is going to say to the little boy she is treating to explain what procedure he is going to have to go through. The second stage will be Jenny has figured out what she is planning on saying to the little boy so that he understands. The third stage will occur when the nurse then goes and explains to the little boy what the doctors are going to do to.
The fourth stage the little boy hears what the nurse has said and he reacts to the information with some kind of emotion. The fourth stage the little boy begins to process the information and understand what she has just said. The final stage the little boy talks to the nurse so that everything is a lot clearer to him and so he feels more relaxed. The advantages of Argyles theory can be the theory helps to understand the person you are communicating with more clearly. The Theory also allows you to think before you speak as you have to speak in appropriate manner to match their needs nd age.
The disadvantages of Argyles theory are people may not decode the message properly so they might not understand. The person they are trying may not reply so it may cause confusion and if they don’t reply because they are confused the cycle won’t be able to ongoing as it has to be a two way process. (wiki answers community, unknown) Argyles theory can be used more effective in three ways the first being If you are a social worker you need to clearly and effectively talk to new fostering parents about the process before they go ahead with it.
So it’s our job you as a social worker to make sure they understand everything that is involved. For example you will have to use very simple words and terms so that it is easier for them to understand because you don’t want to confuse them if they are already worried. The second would be if you are a sister on a ward and you need to deliver a presentation about a new machine that has just been produced so to make the communication towards their colleague’s more effective she could plan and practice the presentation before hand so she knows exactly what to say and do.
The final way the theory ould be more effective is in a hospital, there is a young women with a rare lung disease, the consultant who is describing what is wrong with her is using medical jargon. This will cause confusion within this communication because she is not professional or aware of medical jargon, so therefore she won’t understand these specialised choice of words that are chosen by the consultant, may misunderstand the diagnosis and think there is more wrong with her and worry or think it’s not as serious as it is.
This will affect argyles 6 stages because the consultant has chosen a wrong way to send this message. This effects the message coded therefore the consultant would have to choose a different way to send this message. The consultant decides to show what is wrong with her rather than explaining what is wrong with her. This would make communication effective because she will be able to respond to what the consultant is showing her. So therefore the six stages of argyles theory is now complete in this formal meeting.
Tuckman’s Theory towards communication Tuckman’s theory consists of 4 stages that form the process of group interaction. These outline the process that many groups o through during a formation before they can unite and communicate. This theory is aimed at groups, Tuckman’s theory is very important because Tuckman’s theory is widely known as a basis for effective team building. (Moonie, N, 2010)
The four stages of Tuckman’s Theory are: 1. Forming is when a group meets for the first time and they experience different feelings such as anxiety or being excited. 1. Storming is when people begin to push the boundaries and start to fail. There is also conflict due to different working styles. 3. Norming is when people begin to resolve their differences and ppreciate their colleague’s strengths and can ask each other for help and provide constructive feedback. 4. Performing is when they can now work as a team and share ideas. They can also concentrate on the team’s development and reaching their goals so they group is starting to feel more like a team. (Moonie, N, 2010).
A real life example of Tuckman’s theory in health social care setting is when a doctor has a group meeting with a group of surgeons to decide what the best possible treatment for the patient would be. So the first stage will be when they first meet hey may experience different feelings as they know they have to learn to work as part of a team. The second stage of the cycle would be conflict begins to start as people have different opinions and ways of working so they may struggle to come to an agreement.
The third stage they begin to resolve their differences and appreciate their colleague’s strengths so they can help each other and give constructive feedback. The final stage they start to work as part of a team and development. Concentrating on their goals. You can use Tuckman’s theory effectively by when paramedics et new colleagues to work with, they need to learn to adapt and become familiar with the each individuals working technique so that they can develop and work as part of a team.
Also when doctors and nurses work together they both deal with different kinds of problems, however when they work together they might both have different opinions on how to deal with the patient. This can cause conflict and disagreements between them. Tuckman’s theory is used effectively when surgeons have to go in to the operating theatre because they have to learn to work as part of a team and understand how heir other colleagues kike to work.
So they would go through three stages until they got to the final stage which is performing before they could work as part of a team. Finally Tuckman’s theory is also used effectively when dentists and their dental assistants have to work together. When they first start working together they go through a range of different emotions and they may find it hard working together as they might have different techniques, this could cause conflict between them. So they need to get an understanding of each other so that they are capable of working as part of a team.
