John F. Kennedys inaugural speech took please on January 20, 1961 during the Cold War that consist of the power of communist over the United States and its government. The speech was said to motivate and express his (the presidents) thoughts on what actions should be implemented to come out victorious. John F. Kennedys used many rhetorical devices to make his appeals more concrete. As John F. Kennedy uses his decides he also uses other appeals such as chiasmus and alliteration to emphasize his speech and try to make his point across.
In the next paragraphs, I will go into strict detail by providing historical background, a background on president John F. Kennedy, the appeals used, and the significance and effect of the speech. In John F. Kennedys, Inaugural Address, he utilizes rhetorical appeals, repetition and alliteration to make his speech more concrete for others to understand the importance of coming out victorious in the Cold War. Historical Background During the early 1950s, the issue on the spread of communism arose due to the attempt to spread its form of government. As that issue arose so did the questioning on what actions that U. S. president John F.
Kennedy would take to contain the communist. The actions of president John F. Kennedy would mark a very important historic event that would prove the importance of the containment while also proving the power of the United States over any other country and its form of government. Although the issue of the Nuclear Bombs, and Civil Rights movement didn’t get addressed during the speech it was very important to understand the value of one’s rights and the power that a country would impose on others based on military power. The Cold War didn’t happen as one thinks war is about, the Cold War was mostly confrontation between Russia and the U. S. that almost led to actual shooting, such as Berlin and the Cuban missile crisis. The actions taken by the U. S. allowed one to understand the strict policy of zero tolerance to the Communist.
The other things that occurred as I previously mentioned was the issues of racism and trying to eliminate segregation in both schools and the public in general. John F. Kennedy helped support famous people that helped eliminate slavery such as Martin Luther King who was famous different events that tried to make a change in the government such as the walk on Washington hich was basically a gathering of many people from all races that came together where Mr. King gave his famous speech “I have a dream. ” Although many President before him tried to eliminate the society from established under racism, John F. Kennedy tried very hard to get many things passed to help support anti-slavery. Congress and the Supreme Court were known as racist authority. These were the people that John F. Kennedy tried to convince of the horrible racism occurring as well as the American citizens who saw no rejoice in creating equality.
John F. Kennedy During John F. Kennedy’s presidency, many things occurred based on the events that took place in this period since many issues were being resolved such as the containment of communism, the issue on segregation and the actions taken by many to resolve the problem on racism. John F. Kennedy was a very important president in history because he accomplished many things such as the first colored people to attend an all white’s school, helped inform the country about the importance of one’s rights and the threat that commits opposes on the world and most importantly the nationalism that he brought upon many U. S. itizens.
John F. Kennedy was one of nine children that his mother, Rose F. Kennedy, who was like any ordinary American family. Joseph P. Kennedy, John F. Kennedy’s dad, was a very important businessman who entered politics in his years alive. The life of politics entered the nine children in which most played an important role in society. John F. Kennedy will always be remembered for many years as an important man to United States history as he helped eliminate slavery through the power of the government. He got many people around the county involved in the actions that many Americans should make.
He got many young people involved in politics by emphasizing their importance and how they are the future of our country and the success and change they can make to better the country. Not as much presidents before John F. Kennedy bothered to help the country while also focusing on the alliance of other countries to contain communism. John F. Kennedy will always be known as the president that deforested all odds and made the right actors that helped eliminate many bad things that had a positive impact on the country.
Rhetoric Analysis John F. Kennedy used ethos, pathos, and logos as a foundation for a strong eveloped speech that would carry-out a formal message. Kennedy sets ethos, ethnical appeal, by putting different people of high class to make his argument strong as he starts his address by “Vice President Johnson, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, President Truman, reverend clergy, fellow citizens, we observe today not a victory of party, but celebration of freedom, which symbolizes an end as well as a beginning, signifying renewal, as well as change. ” He then also establishes logos into different sections.
Which he then divides the world into different categories based on the way one lives and what they believe in. Most importantly Kennedy wrapped up his argument up by providing pathos in the appearing of American pride, and other important concepts that will be essential to the success in the Cold War. Although, he uses those three-rhetorical appeals. He also included the use of chiasmus as he constantly repeats very important phrases like, “Let us but negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate. ” One of his most famous quotes that would made his speech unforgettable, “Ask not what your country can do for you.
Ask what you can do for your country. ” Alliteration is also used when Kennedy states, “Let us go forth to lead the land we love. ” This phrase is used to emphasize the task that has been assigned to the U. S. by “God. ” These devices are used to ensure that his point gets across about the destiny of the U. S. coming our victorious in the Cold War and eliminate the threat of nuclear warfare. The implementations of these devises allow John F. Kennedy to establish a speech that may captivate the audience in a way to develop a good mindset for the war. Significance and Effect
The challenge to show the desire and power of the United States over the USSR and communist was also based on technology. Even though, the United States showed their Nuclear Warfare was more powerful over any other country during the bombing in Hiroshima. Many others doubted the America to come out as the very first country to land on the mood. President Kennedy describes this task over the Russians as, “The race to space,” or as others like to call it, “The Space Race. ”
After the speech people then realized how important it would be to fund the space programs as he claims, “Together let us explore the stars. This allowed others to understand that the effort to prove the power of the United States was not only to benefit the government, but to unite the people as this could only be accomplished by a whole not by a single person. As a nation, everyone came together and tried in the Cold War to try the best to help. One main factor that happened was the execution to help win the Space Race which was accomplished when John Glenn became the first person to orbit the Earth. He could finish this mission as congress helped fund 22 billion to Apollo.
As this also happened so did the effort of the youth to get involved with politics as President John F. Kennedy tried to eliminate segregation in the education system. This then became in effect as young many people attended the “Walk in Washington,” as many people came together to help support the Civil Rights movement, which helped eliminate segregation in the school districts (especially in the south). As the people slowly came together to make important decisions for their country during the war, it also influenced another issue that took place during this time, racism.
The reason on why the unification of the people influenced racism is, because everyone came together and taught for the unjust treatment that others faced. President John F. Kennedy also helped bring this unjust treatment to an end by expressing his feelings on the situation. He helped promote and flex the rights that colored people had and tried to support the use of freedom of speech and rallies that helped promote equality. More and more people came together to help make the country a better place. For many years, the issues on segregation never got resolved by the government.
John F. Kennedy brought the issues of segregation into people life by expressing the wrongfulness that it has. John F. Kennedy made many Americans understand that the only way to solve these problems is by realizing that there is one. John F. Kennedy did a lot of years in his time as president. Although many people admired his work in office many people opposed the authority he had in office. Not a lot of people loved the work he did such as the funding for the Space Race, the containment of communist, alliance with foreign countries, and the elimination of segregation in school districts and the public. Unfortunately, John F.
Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas Texas by Lee Harvey Oswald. Although during investigations nobody understood why Lee killed the president in any motive, people discovered that Lee Harvey Oswald was in fact physiologically not all there. John F. Kennedy will always be known for many generations as one of the greatest presidents and as one who gave very memorable speeches to the citizens of the United States. The inaugural speech will always be known as one to remember as it brought motivation and nationality to the people and brought the country together in a time of hardship.
