Hamlet William Shakespeare develops the characters themes throughout Throughout the story there’s many different themes, but theres one in particular that stands out to me and that’s Horatio’s friendship. This friendship is very different from most because of his actions. Shakespeare constructs horatio friendship through a positive appeal. Throughout the story shakespeare implies literary terms such as allegory, figurative language and metaphors. After the tragic death of Prince Hamlet’s father, Hamlet felt hatred, madness, and despair, and Throughout all of Hamlet’s tragic tale Horatio remained by his side like a good friend.
Horatio’s role in this play is very vital to the story of hamlet. Horatio is a great companion and he does not include anything to the plot of the play and acts like the voice of common sense and peace maker. As hamlet encounters the death of his father and goes through a dramatic breakthrough , horatio stays with him as his companion and true friend. Although horatio stay with Hamlet through the hard times, Horatio closely observes the madness of hamlet that he ensues after the killing of his own father.
As the play continues horatio soliloquies continue to speculate about other killing his father king hamlet. Hamlet has deep conversation with horatio as he still faces the terrifying tragedy, and horatio comes too find out deep secrets no one knew but hamlet. Hamlet decides to only tell horatio because that’s the only true person hamlet can trust and the only person he can call a true friend. As hamlet reveals everything that is going on in his life he encountered with the ghost witch all occurred at the beginning of the play.
Horatio believes that hamlet if imaginating thing and does not believe him, but after he encounters it himself he then believes the mistake he has done and tells him that he does believe hamlet. After horatio agrees with hamlet this allow the readers to believe hamlet and not think this was part of his imagination.
At the first sighting of the ghost, horatio urges to hamlet and demands him to stay away from the ghost, says ” what if it tempt you toward the flood, my lord … And there assume some other horrible form/which might deprive your sovereignty of reason/and draw you into madness? Think of it/the very place puts toys of desperation /without more motive, into every brain” William Shakespeare Act 1, Scene 4, 77-84. As the story continued hamlet was always in need of horatio, for example when he needed help advice or even a favor horatio was alway there to assist hamlet “bid the players make haste will you two help to haste them? / ay my lord/ what ho horatio/ here, sweet lord, at your service” Act 3, Scene 2, 51-55.
Horatio is such a great character to talk about he’s one of the main characters in the play and he might seem like he plays a small role but actually plays one of the biggest role of the play and also surprises many with the way he is toward others but mainly Hamlet. As the play goes on we the readers should start by noticing that horatio is that a person to cause harm, the only thing he tries to do is make peace between others and himself. ” what are they that would speak with me? /seafaring men, sir. They say they have letters for you/let them come in.
I do not know from what part of the world i should be greeted, if not from Lord Hamlet” Act 4, Scene 6, 1-6. The next character that we will be discussing is Hamlet. Now hamlet is this play is the main character he is all over the place and also has been through a lot ever since his father Lord Hamlet has died. As Hamlet discover the tragedy that has happen to his father he is full with depression and rage he tries to find out the killer of his father and find revenge. ” … As meditation or the thoughts of ove,/ May sweep to my revenge. /… Wouldst thou not stir in this.
Now, Hamlet, hear. /’Tis given out that, sleeping in my orchard,/A serpent stung me. So the whole ear of Denmark/ls by a forged process of my death/Rankly abused. But know, thou noble youth,/The serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown. ” Act 1, Scene 5, 37-47. Once the ghost had told hamlet that his uncle claudius was the one that killed him, hamlet was destined to get revenge and make him pay for what he had done to his father Lord Hamlet.
Although hamlet tried to get back and his uncle King Claudius tried to act like he did know what was going on he acted lost there for when hamlet tried to tell his mother who had killed her husband she did not believe young Hamlet. Hamlet was so heartbroken after she heard that his mother the queen had married his uncle “ And yet, within a month/(Let me not think on ‘t; frailty, thy name is woman! ),/A little month, or ere those shoes were old/With which she followed my poor father’s body,/married with my uncle,/My father’s brother, but no more like my father/Than I to Hercules. Act 1, Scene 2, 149-58.
To hamlet knowing that his mother had gotten remarried has been a devastating disaster, first he killed his father and know he takes his wife and marries her that gave him more reasons to why get revenge on his uncle. As hamlet tried to unfold the truth from his uncle. While all that was going on Hamlet decided to take his own father’s body and take it to a place nobody will ever know and bury it without anyone knowing, but Rosencrantz notices that the body was gone and asked hamlet about it but hamlet acts like he doesn’t know what he is talking about.
“What have you done, my lord, with the dead body? Compounded it with dust, whereto ’tis kin. /Tell us where ’tis, that we may take it thence/And bear it to the chapel. Act 4, Scene 2, 5-8. As hamlet is off doing something else with the body of his father the King encounters Laertes and blames Hamlet for the death of his father, witch then after hamlet returns from the grave yard laertes faces him face to face and challenges him to a fight, since that’s how they solved their problems back in the day.
Though Hamlet doesn’t know what is going on he accepts the challenge but quickly notices that the King had something to do with it, because he is trying to get back at hamlet. I’ll play this bout first. / Set it by awhile. Come. / Another hit. What say you? /A touch, a touch. I do confess ‘t. /Our son shall win. ” Act 5, Scene 2, 309-12. After the fight had ended and Hamlet had won the Queen had drank the wine which had poison in it and Horatio noticed something wrong. what they had seen was that she was dead. ” How does the Queen? /She swoons to see them bleed. / No, no, the drink, the drink! O, my dear Hamlet The drink, the drink! I am poisoned. ” Act 5, Scene 2, 338-41.
Sadly after the mother died and Laertes died Hamlet was upset he had lost two important people in there life he didn’t know what to do so he killed himself. Horatio was very depressed his great so call friend was gone and the Queen was also dead. Horatio wanted to kill himself he didn’t know what to do with himself, through the beginning to the end of the play Horatio has always been there for Hamlet even through the worst things and he was still with him when he died , Horatio has always been the greatest companion and has been there for everyone when they needed him the most.
Fortinbras was trying to keep Horatio calm from what had just happened so he convinced him to just pray for them and their spirits. Although it was very hard for Horatio to do that he decided that it was for the best to let go although it was very hard. “Bear Hamlet like a soldier to the stage,/For he was likely, had he been put on/To have proved most royal; and for his passage,/The soldier’s music and the rite of war/Speak loudly for him. /Take up the bodies. Such a sight as this/Becomes the field but here shows much amiss. /Go, bid the soldiers shoot. ” Act 5, Scene 2, 441-49.
