History Of Police Brutality Essay

Police brutality is the use of any excessive force that is unreasonable or unwanted. Police brutality has had a long history in the U. S. In the early days of policing, acts of mass brutality were usually attributed to the poor labor workers. Back in the day young black slaves were targeted to be beaten or lynched. In most black minds today they see a pattern occurring over and over. As years go by blacks are being targeted, gunned down, killed, and put into jail by police officers.

The brutality and the harraments that gets weighed on blacks are a way of showing that we still live in a world where racial discrimination goes on and police brutality gets even strong and it has become a serious cause in the U. S. Most cops are trained to be conscientious towards shooting minorities, they think picking up a gun or using their force on a minority will slove the problem in most cases. “They spend much of their time in the chaotic and depressing nether-reaches of society” (Brooks). This shows that most cops do not think about what they do when trying to enforce the law on minorities.

Cops think getting aggresive and showing people who they really are will solve the problem, but it will not. ” Cops experience moments of intense action and alertness, followed by emotional crashes marked by exhaustion, and isolation” (Brooks). Cops show so much of an unsympathetic attitude towards blacks in this world that they will just go around killing them, and making them feel less like a human. “According to a 2000 National Institute of Justice study, more than 90 percent of the police officers surveyed said that it is wrong to respond to verbal abuse with force.

Nonetheless, 15 percent of the cops surveyed were aware that officers in their own department sometimes or often did so” (Brooks). In others minds they think a cop is suppose to protect and make it a safer environment but if cops are given a survey that says it is wrong to respond to verbal abuse as well as physical. Why would they use force on blacks and make them feel less than human. Cops will always have a mind of their own, it’s only a matter of time when it will change. In reality rumors come from all over the place.

People will make up lies to make it seem true, Police rumors has a big effect on today’s society, why because police are aware of the threats that they have made to other people, In the case of a 18 year old, Junior Manon was murdered by two police officers. The police officers stated that Junior Manon was fighting the officers and trying to break free because of his “breaching Bail condition”. Evidence showed that Junior Manon was nowhere near touching the two police officers, evidence clearly showed that the two police officers pursued Manon on foot and brought him to the ground forcefully.

The officers said Junior Manon was on his stomach, and they never applied any pressure to his back” (CBC News). In the courtroom rumors spoke otherwise, Manon a dead man’s sister says “her family now knows “the truth” about what happened to her brother two years ago. “The way that they held him down was what caused his death,” she said”(CBC News). What the police officers said was a rumor, Manon was not fighting the police officer back, instead the officers claimed once they put their hands on Manon he was trying to resist his arrest. But evidence clearly showed that Manon was not the one using his force on the officer.

It was clearly stated in officer Gary Clewley testimony “It was the subsequent pursuit that he initiated that resulted in him being in any kind of prone position. We didn’t put him there,” (CBC News). The officer’s statements in the court were false. the two officer’s level of force showed that the marks on Manon body was not because he was trying to resist his arrest, it was because the two officers beat him to the ground.

The rumors have always been a big issue in the courtroom because lawyers take what they’re defendant tells them and it does not match what they said in the beginning of their story. fix the conclusion up) One of the main causes of police brutality become more and more challenging in lots of ways we hold police officer to a high standard of accountability and they never show us how accountable they really are in certain situations. The accountability for police officers becomes lower each time officers use excessive force. Why should we as the people respect police officers if they show a lack of communication, excessive force, and lack of accountability.

Training will do little or nothing to attenuate the harm of police misconduct, some officers are not trained the right way to handle a situation when it comes to using excessive force and beating on people, instead officers are train to pin people down like dogs, and make them feel less than a human. “There is no need to train an officer not to beat a handcuffed victim senseless or break his neck by shoving him into window” (The New York Times ). If police officers were trained not to shove people against the wall, handcuffing them for no reason, and break their necks, this means that police officers take matters into their own hands.

There’s so much respect we give police officers, but there is less respect that police officers give us, police officers think as a society that we disrespect them all the time, police officers are not showing how accountable they are to society without pulling out a gun and beating people to the ground. If the law enforcement holds the society to a high standard then why can’t police be held to the same thing. “When an incident occurs, regardless of fault, the entire precinct, from captain down, rallies around the offending officer with self-serving reports and the supportive testimony of fellow officers” (The New York times).

Not knowing how much pressure and accountability is being put on police officers, there should be a right and wrong way to handle situations with the people they are protecting which is the people of this country. It’s always questionable if black lives even matter, it’s questionable that blacks are a target to losing their lives or either getting put into jail for wrongdoing even when they’re not wrong. “Blacks are presumed to be up to no good, to be no good. Black lives are flippantly extinguished, not least by cops, by state representatives, by law and order” (David Goldberg).

As days go by blacks will always be looked down on, the lack of respect that is showed by authority and courtrooms are ridiculous. The law enforcement thinks killing, hurting, and brutality beating blacks will get them to stop acting in a disrespectful manner. In order for police officers to have the respect from blacks they must treat them with the same respect. Movement focuses on the fact that black citizens have long been far more likely than whites to die at the hands of the police, and is of a piece with this history. Black people have endured for struggles then white people.

The lack of indisputable acts towards blacks does not democrat who they are as people. the lives of black citizen in this country has a historical background to why blacks act a certain way. Blacks have been discounted, Misunderstood, and understandably uncomfortable with their skin because they are living in fear that police officers will take there life away from them at any second. Being in a world where black will never gain the respect for police is hard to live by. typically African Americans fear for what the future will look like.

As time goes by police do not notices how many lives they have taken from the black community. To see that racial discrimination is continuing through generation after generation is hard to deal with. As blacks want to be able to lend cops there trust, it’s kind of hard if police officers are just going around killing blacks for the pleasure and feeling some type of towards their action and the percussion that they have to make. As young black lives are being taken, and more are not willing to put their trust into the police people should cover up the unpleasant truth and collaborate as a country and reunite as one and make peace.
