Banning Genetically Modified Organisms In Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Essay

Science leads to medical, and technological advances, and even the modification of food humans eat, in Mary Shelley’s gothic novel, Frankenstein, she captures question of how scientists can do this. “The world to me was a secret, which I desired to discover: to her it was a vacancy, which she sought to people with imaginations of her own” (Shelly 21). All the discoveries Scientist make lead to a bigger questions of truly how safe is the modification of food. The United States alone, consumes over 70%-80% of the Genetically Modified Organisms made.

Most eveloped countries have either restriction or have banned Genetically Modified Organisms after chronic illness, food allergies and other mental/health disorders have increased. Over the last couple of years, the demand for Organic and Non- Genetically Modified Organisms has increased tremendously. American’s have the money to purchase Organic and Non- Genetically Modified Organisms products and this will help decrease with childhood obesity and food allergies. If Genetically Modified Organisms were benefiting the public like claimed they are, improved nutrition and helped the economy, I ould support them 110%.

However, Genetically Modified Organisms have lead to an increase of food allergies in children and adults, the decrease of antibody efficacy in food, and shows no economical significant value opposes to Non-Genetically Modified Organisms, Genetically Modified Organisms should be banned in the United States. As usual, Democrats and Republicans state their political view on any topic, food is one of them. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is involved with Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), which promotes Monsanto, the maker of RoundUp and RoundUP Ready seeds. ACcording to, Hillary vs.

Bernie on Frankenfood in Huffpost Politics, “It’s also unlikely for Hillary Clinton to stand up against her benefactors, saying she favors a review of RoundUp, 2, 4-D, and the even more toxic poisons used by farmers worldwide when she has friends in the industry telling her that they will “feed the world” someday with their agricultural methods” (Frankel Par. 8). America’s foundation is built off of strong, hard working men and women who use agriculture as their source of income. Masonato’s claims that Genetically Modified Organisms are harmless and positive for the economy, while time and time again studies prove otherwise.

If the studies show how harmful these chemicals are to the human body then why do American’s still purchase these products and why does the government allow it to happen? The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not require labeling for Genetically Modified Organisms, leading Americans to not knowing what they are truly purchasing. According to a New York Times poll, Nine out of 10 Americans want Genetically Modified Organisms disclosure on food ackages but the food industries have a guilty conscience about what is in their food and does not want to tell the truth about their products.

Vermont recently passed a law requiring labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms on their food and other states has considered also requiring Genetically Modified Organisms labels, but activist wants congress to preempt Vermont for this law and also like-minded states as well. Although the FDA requires certain labeling for ingredients and basic nutritional values, it is too much to ask for Genetically Modified Organisms labeling. If you are going to spend your hard earned money on food, you the consumer have the right to know what exactly it is you are purchasing.

The polls continue to show, the significant majority of Americans want to know if the food they are purchasing contains Genetically Modified Organisms. The government needs to reevaluate their priorities and do something about the dangers in Genetically Modified Organisms, and until so the American people will take this matter into their own hands. Despite all the political and social drama the Genetically Modified Organisms bring, the amount of health issues verweights them heavily. Since Genetically Modified Organisms have been introduced to food industry, there has been a substantial increase in food allergies in children and adults.

Studies have shown how proteins produced by engineered plants (also known as GMOS) are different than the way they should be. According to Thierry Vrain in “Former Pro-GMO Scientist Speaks Out On The Real Dangers of Genetically Engineered Food”, “Inserting a gene in a genome using this technology can and does result in damaged proteins. The scientific literature is full of studies showing the engineered corn nd soya contain toxic or allergenic proteins” (Vrain Par. 9). The human body works based on the proteins that come from the food you eat, and are crucially needed to help the body function.

The proteins that you take in, work in different ways, some are used to build cardiac muscle or helps oxygen to every part of the body. Once the body begins taking these toxic proteins in, it will begin to break down the immune system your body has developed and will eventually leave you with no immune system leaving your body vulnerable to illness and diseases. Besides the health issues with proteins being enetically modified and causing health problems with the immune system, the amount of food allergies have increased as well.

In an article by Organic Consumers Association, “GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions”, “There is concern that GM foods pose an allergy risk. Currently the list of GM food products intersect with the eight most common food allergens: eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat” (“GE Foods Can Cause Allergic Reactions” Par. 5). Children are now missing vital nutrients and having to turn to taking supplements for the proteins they are not receiving. It is not just children who are having to seek extra supplements for their dietary needs caused by these food allergens but adults as well.

The adults consumption of Pedialyte has increased to almost 60% since 2012 and now make up for one-third of Pedialyte’s sales. Eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat make up food pyramid and are all important/ necessary food items that must be consumed in order to keep the human body functioning properly. All these food concerns pose a bigger question of how healthy is Genetically Modified Organisms for he human immune system? If all these food concerns are being brought to the public’s eye, shouldn’t the government do something about it.

Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, wife, introduced the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which is improving children’s nutrition at school and improving the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children. If the first lady can get an Act approved to increase the nutritional level for children in public schools then why can the government do something about regulating, testing and stopping Genetically Modified Organisms. Overall the question still remains about how healthy can Genetically Modified Organisms really be for the immune system, in an article by Allergic Child they talk about this.

First they mention how research studies have linked genetically modified foods with allergic lung damage in mice and the creating of antibodies specific to a food protein. In the article, “Possible Cause of Food Allergies”, one of the authors says, “How good is that for human immune systems? No one really knows because no human trials are required. I suppose the massive human trial has actually been occurring since 1994 hen those Flavr Savr Tomatoes hit the market.

It’s interesting to note that peanut allergies doubled between the dates of 1997 and 2002” (“Possible Cause of Food Allergies” Par. 4). The fact that peanut allergies have doubled since 1997 and 2002 says a lot but now recent studies shows it has tripled from 1997 and 2008. Of the eight foods mentioned early, milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish account for 90 percents of all allergic reactions. After seeing how intense the numbers have grown over the last decade, you wonder why the government has
