Major aspects that pertain your identity Identity is something that defines an individual. There are many different aspects that help a person understand and shape their identity. For example, their race, gender, family, personality, and culture are all things that could make up a person’s identity. Identity can either be assigned or can be chosen. Personality and race are two different aspects that define a person’s identity. While one is the identity you choose and the other is one you assigned the day you’re born. Both of these identities bring many obstacles in life just like many people, I faced those obstacles as well.
It is important to understand how the intersection of identities such as personality and race can create challenges. Chosen identity is when a person decides to pick and choose what they want to show the world. A person’s personality could also depend on how they are dressed, how that person talks and how that person behaves with others. The first thing people will notice about a person is the way a person is dressed. For instance, In the article “Why is Everyone Focused on Zuckerberg’s Hoodie? ” Sengupta, goes into detail about how Mark Zuckerberg wore a hoodie to a meeting with his investors.
At this meeting, he was criticized for his choice of apparel. All of that money that he is making, according to the Forbes List of the World’s Billionaires, Mark Zuckerberg is number six making roughly about 44. 6 billion dollars. Despite that, he is the CEO of Facebook which is worth 55. 3 billion dollars. Zuckerberg wears a hoodie because it is his own form of personal expression and that is his style! “Because it is his trademark” (228). Zuckerberg’s identity shouldn’t be based on how he dresses, but it should be identified as what type of person he is and what he is there for.
Clothing should not matter, he is still extremely successful so why should he show himself differently in front of people? Just so it can contribute to his image? But, according to him, this is more comfortable than dressing up formally. It is not necessary for an individual to dress up and go to work. And at the stage where he is it should not matter how he is dress unless he dresses inappropriately. A person has to be comfortable in the clothes that he or she wears because if that person is not comfortable with themselves then they will feel that discomfort inside of them.
If a person is going on a job interview, perhaps they will dress up and talk to them in a wellmannered tone differently than how they talk to their friends because “First impression is a lasting impression”. Even though, there are times where a person needs to dress formal and go to work but, that would mostly be if they have a presentation or meeting with an individual. It also depends on where that person is working but usually, not many people are seen in formal dresses on their regular work day. A person’s behavior describes them as a person because when they try to be what they are not, that behavior doesn’t stick for too long.
Trying to live another person’s life or try to copy another person’s life will never work and it won’t even suit the person who’s copying. Eventually, it starts dissolving. However, if a person just be themselves and show the world what type of person they are, then they should not have any problems. People would more likely start to appreciate them in the way they are. People would also behave with that person more properly and also respect them a bit more, and similarly to how they are presenting them self to others. Every person that I have met in my life has had a different behavior.
I have a friend, she’s a really nice as a person but, she has a behavioral problem. Which is she shows a lot of attitude to everyone and she would never talk to anyone unless that person comes talks to her. If someone comes and talks to her she will be the nicest person ever and she will stop showing them attitude. This behavior of her makes people think oh she’s so rude and people thinks that she doesn’t like them. Even with teachers, she shows attitude. Because of this sometimes in the beginning of the school year if the teacher never knew her then the teacher tells her to be nice and stop being so rude.
This shows her personality and it impact on other people’s thinking and how it changes other people’s thinking about her. We all know how there are many racist people in this world and they don’t like certain people with different race. The biggest problem in this entire world right now is racism. Nicole Chung, tells us how race affected her. In the article “What Goes Through Your Mind: On Nice Parties and Casual Racism”. A woman mentioned in the article had said “Every Asian American has fielded some variation on all look the same”. Chung was offended and more over she felt embarrassed by the women’s statement.
Chung was mad but, since it was a party she had kept quiet and didn’t utter a word as she knew no one was going to support her. However, in my opinion she shouldn’t have kept quiet because her silence could lead to more of these remarks happening in the future and specially that lady who said it won’t know she’s wrong and she shouldn’t say this. Chung also mentions that Asian people are not brave to show the world that people in colors “are not interchangeable”. Nobody should be judged by their skin color or on the bases of their appearance. However, her husband was with her during this incident and he hadn’t reacted at all.
In fact, he kept quiet and listened on when he should have supported her. Despite, whatever the case is if your wife/husband are getting bullied by your own family members you should also stand up with your life partner as they put so much trust in you that you will come and support me. Similarly, I have gone through something like this. During, my four years in High School people in almost all my classes used to think that Indian people are really smart and they know everything. Whenever someone who’s Indian gives a wrong answer they indirectly make themselves look like a moron in front of others.
One time in my history class we were learning about politics and we were having a debate. I was sitting there quietly and listening to them because I am not into politics or history. Neither, do I understand how politics works around the whole world. Just than my classmates said that “why can’t this smarty pants answer the question to my teacher” I didn’t react to it I just ignored him.
Our class debate was going on and I generally was wishing for my teacher to not ask me anything since, I don’t know much about India by heart as I never payed attention in history class back in India. o, I was quietly sitting then this boy was like “he’s Indian he should know how politics are in his country! He should also know how corrupt some policemen are there” and everyone started staring at me. This made me feel so embarrassed to say anything. I responded saying I know what I learned and how my country is. They have also made fun of me because of my accent when I first came from India. It used to affect me in many ways because I didn’t feel like I fitted with everyone here. Adjusting to the American lifestyle was hard for me just like it would be for any foreigner.
Some kids used to also bully me Because I was placed in an ESL class where they used to make fun of me because I would struggle with promotions sometimes. However, as days became into months my accent and my lifestyle changed after some time. But, my values and beliefs never changed because that’s where my roots are from and, no matter wherever I go they will always remain the same. The only thing I wanted to change is people use to think that I don’t know English when I came to America and I have shown them and proved them wrong by learning and telling them that everyone can learn.
Personality and race do identify a person and it does give that person many challenges in their life. I have faced those similar challenges in some ways. We can choose our personality and how we want to show ourselves to the world but, we cannot choose our race. Race is something we are identified by which country and which family we were born in. There are so many other identities that people are identified by but, I think personality and race are the two most common identity.
Everyone has an identity that efines them somehow in some way. What I think is, it is not right to judge others by what they have gotten when they were born and I don’t think every person will like to be judge by what they have gotten everyone wants to be judge by what they are made by themselves and what they have agreed on. So, people should judge others by what they choose to show not what they cannot choose and they are born with because I don’t think I will like it if someone judge me by my assigned identity so why should I judge them by their assigned identity.
