Lies are told around the world multiple times during the day. Everyone sitting in this room has probably once today, said a lie. Sometimes lying is understandable for someone’s protection but sometimes the truth is essential to the person. There are multiple things people say in a day that are seen as lies such as “That outfit looks really good on you! ,” “It wasn’t me! ” and “I’ll be with you in a few minutes. ” Honestly is not always the best policy because in the end it does not make everything better.
People tell little lies so that they protect someone they care about and not hurt the feelings of another person. Honesty not always being the best policy is showed in The Scarlet Letter, “Tell All The Truth” poem, the “He Lies” video, Lies We Tell Kids article, and Why People Lie article. The Scarlet Letter shows its readers that honesty is not always the best policy. In the Scarlet Letter, everyone eventually lies and they don’t necessarily get in trouble because of it. In this story, lying helped in many different situations.
In this story Chillingworth lied about being a doctor and this helped him by allowing him to talk face to face with Hester and allows him to plan revenge on whoever got Hester pregnant. Hester lies to the people by not telling them who got her pregnant and this is to help and protect Dimmesdale from all the people. Lastly, Dimmesdale lies about committing adultery with Hester and this is to protect his reputation. In this story, it allows the readers to understand some of the ways lying can be used to protect someone or something the person who is lying, care for.
In this book, there is a lot of lying going on but all of it is being used so that in the end someone is protected. Also in the poem “Tell All The Truth,” Emily Dickinson is telling people to only say the truth in slants. If you are having to tell the truth in slants to someone then you shouldn’t being telling them at all because obviously they can’t handle the truth all at once. A person that cannot receive a lot of truth all at once, is obviously worried about the truth and I think you shouldn’t be worried about anything dealing with the truth.
I think God would agree that if someone really thinks the shirt is hideous on the person, that they should lie and say it looks good because you should make every person beautiful. God created us to be happy and grateful but he did not create us to be worried about what we looks like or what someone didn’t actually do but they said they did. In this poem, Emily Dickinson is saying you should tell the truth, but you should tell it in slants and when I read this poem it actually made me realize that the truth is not necessarily always necessary for particular people.
Sometimes parents tell lies to protect their kid and allow their kid to enjoy growing up and looking back at their childhood. In the video “He Lies”, the dad is lying to his daughter everyday. This video was tough to watch but it really shows how important it is for someone to lie to their kid to make their day everyday. In this video the dad is lying about having money, having a job, not being tired and etc. but most importantly he lies to his daughter to make her happy. In the video it shows him making the daughter laugh while buying her ice cream with the money he works hard for while not being employed.
The dad is tired in the video and you can tell but he lies to her and acts like the happiest man in the world around her. This video truly shows the dad’s love for his daugher. The dad has a reason to lie to his daughter, and that reason is because he wants to make her life have a better turnout than his did. This video really shows the deep message about how honesty is truly not always the best policy. Lies are sometimes told without us even knowing we are telling them.
In the Why People Lie article, it shows that overtime, e, when we tell one lie and are required to lie about the same thing to others so it looks like the truth, we become immune to the lie we are telling. After telling the lie a few times to different people, we even believe our own lie and we believe that it happened. Honestly, the thought of believing your own lie that you know you’re lying about is sad! Also in this article it states that research has proven that kids by the age of 3, know that lying has some short term benefits that they lie for. Another study shared in this article shows that an average adult tells approximately 13 lies a week.
In this article it shows that people do lie and obviously if nothing is being down after the research, then there is no big problem towards lying. Yes, sometimes lying in specific situations is very bad but at the same time honesty is not always the best way to go. In the next article, Lies We Tell Kids, we read about a various amount of ways lying to our kids helps them in the long run. Just a few of the things talked about in the article is the reason parents lie because of protection over their child, death, and peace. In this article talking about those three things eventually helped their child.
First, parents lie to their kids about a lot of thing to just keep them innocent and sweet and protecting them from knowing that there are some bad people and things in this world. Secondly, parents lie to their kids about death because no kid should have to go through the death of someone close to them or someone they know and by doing this the parents are protecting their child. Last but not least, parents tell lies to their kids about something to keep peace because parents are not wanting to deal with the kid asking more and more questions about the event or thing they are lying about.
In this article it shows that parents are lying to their children not to lie to make things sound better, but to protect their children. In all of these book, videos, poems, and article are reason to why honesty is not always the best policy. Sometimes lies have to be told to keep the protection or happiness of another person. God would not want you to hurt someone or make someone upset by telling them that someone close to them is slowly passing away or that their outfit does not compliment them in the best way.
God created this world as a happy place nd I think he would be okay with us telling tiny lies every once and awhile to protect someone we are close to, too make them happy and to allow them to have confidence that everyone always says we should have. Honesty is not always the best policy because we should rather want others to be happy and lie, than have them sad and tell the honesty. At the end of the day it isn’t about the amount of lies you told as long as you made someone’s day pr protected someone you know from something they would’ve been hurt by.
