The Government is made up of three branches. Those three branches are the Executive branch, Legislative branch and the Judicial branch. The Legislative Branch is led by congress. The main job of this branch is to make the laws. There are four parts to the Legislative branch. Those four parts are the House of Representatives, the Senate, Making Laws and The Veto. The first important part of this branch is the House of Representatives who represent the state based on population. States that have a bigger population have more representatives and states with fewer population have less representatives.
The second important part is the Senate. The Senator’s job is to approve or reject treaties and presidential nominations for the government. The third part is making the laws. When they introduce the bill is when they debate on passing it and discuss and have everyone agree on it. The fourth and last part of the Legislative branch is the veto. A bill only becomes a law if the president passes it, the president can also veto a law which also means to decline it. However, many people believe that the Legislative Branch has less work than the Executive Branch.
Despite the fact that people think the Executive Branch is more powerful, the Legislative Branch still makes up most of the laws. S territories such as Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia have a different representation. The constitution is required to hold a census every ten years which is where they calculate the new population of the state and check if they need more representatives per state because the population might increase. At the first census session there were fifty nine people, today there are 435 in total.
Representatives are reelected every two years. To be a representative you must be a US citizen for seven years and you must be at least twenty five years of age. There are many responsibilities when it comes to our country and you have to be ready to do your job. The Senate is really important to the Legislative Branch. Senates are another alternative when it comes to making laws. Voters elect two Senators from each of the states and population does not matter when it comes to Senators, only House of Representatives. The population or how big or small the state is does not matter.
There are one hundred senators in congress, two from every state. The There will be new Senators elected every six years. “Only the Senate can approve or reject treaties and presidential nominations for government offices. ” This quote states that only the senate has the power to approve or reject the treats and presidential nominations for the government offices. To become a Senator requires thirty years of age, has to be a US citizen for nine years and you have to take action and be familiar with the requirements of residency of the state the person wants to be the Senator of. Making Laws is the main point of the Legislative Branch.
They call a new law a “bill. ” A bill is formed when a member of congress has a desire to create a new law. Any member of congress can create a new law. If the bill consists of taxes or spending then only members from the House of Representatives can deal with that. Before the bill can become law, all two houses of congress must pass the same identical bill. The bill goes through the same really long process when it is first introduced. Every bill has a review committee. Then the bill would become worthy enough or not enough. “In each two-year session, thousands of bills come before Congress.
Almost twelve thousand bills were introduced in Congress in one recent session. Less than five hundred were enacted into law. ” This quote states an example to explain that not all the bills that are sent to the president are always approved. Just like how they sent in twelve thousand and only five hundred officially became law. The Veto is also a big deal when it comes to the Legislative Branch. The only way a bill can become law is if the president signs it. There are many times where the president does not want to pass bills and make them become law so instead he veto bills.
When the president veto bills, they are then sent back to Congress and then congress takes a vote upon the bill and if two thirds of congress are in favor of this bill than it can still become a law. If there are not enough votes to override the president then that bill no longer has a chance at becoming law. The president has many options when it comes to a law. They can either veto the law, sign the bill as a law, or neither. “If Congress is in session, the bill becomes law after ten days without the president’s signature.
Otherwise, the bill suffers a pocket veto and does not become law. ” This quote states that the legislative branch can override the president and they have many powers in the say of the law making process. If the legislative branch really wants this law and has a reasonable explanation as to why then they can go ahead and override the president. This does not always happens, when it does not happen the bill will suffer a pocket veto and does not become a law. Despite the fact that people believe the Executive Branch is more powerful because it deals with the president is not fully true.
The Executive Branch does deal with the president, but that does not mean that he has all the power and laws to make. The president only makes the laws official which is his decision. He does not make the laws, he passes them on. “The President approves and carries out laws passed by the legislative branch. ” That quote states that the president approves and carries out the laws that the legislative branch has passed over to him. This means that the president does not sit and think of a law to pass, that is the legislatives branch job.
The president’s job is to approve of the bill or law and make it official. In conclusion, the legislative branch has many responsibilities in making our country more civilized and a better place to live with more equality. Making laws are a hard job especially when you have to be considerate about everyone and their life, which means you would have to create reasonable laws. The house of representatives and take on a real stressful job and they manage accomplish a lot for our country and make it so that everyone is happy with the new laws.
The senate has just as much as a stressful job as the house of representatives. The senate has many decisions to make when it comes to treaties and presidential nominations and they always consider many things when they are focused on their job. Last but not least, the veto. Veto is a very important part of the legislative branch because you are going to come across some unreasonable bills that might not make sense or does not promote equality or better the state which needs to be gone.
