Clover the Conformist vs. Sojourner Truth the Nonconformist Conformity is following the masses without first asking why and seeing if it is the best option for yourself. In the book Animal Farm, a lot of the character dealt with choosing to either conform or nonconform. Clover a horse, in the book decide to conform and to question herself. She faced critical repercussions. In life, their is always a battle on whether to conform or not. Sojourner Truth is one of the many Americans to stand up for what is right, and nonconform. she spoke her mind and the truth about how she felt on a plethora of topics uch as women’s rights and civil rights.
Sojourner Truth faced minor hardships, but they were worth it in the end. The nature of conformity for clover and sojourner truth is that nonconforming for a good cause, in the long run, can help you and others prosper. Conformity can make you question your own judgment. In the book animal farm, the character Clover was a conformist she didn’t question things. Clover went with whatever her leaders said, even if she thought she remembered differently. In the book Clover thought she remembered that the commandments had a rule against beds, so she went to the wall here they commandments are.
“No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets” page number she announced finally clover had not remembered that fourth commandment mentioned sheets; but it was there on the wall it must have done so”. This quote shows how even though she knew she remembered differently, she didn’t question what the wall said. She figured it was her who forgot the last two words instead of thinking that the pigs changed the rule. Clover still didn’t say anything as this happens over and over again. The pigs even change the biggest and most important commandment, and clover doesn’t oppose it.
But it appears to me that that wall looks different. Because of Clover’s conformity, she faced some consequences. Clover lost her companion, Boxer. Boxer became ill, and clover and the rest of the animals were told by the pigs that he is going to the hospital. Which in fact was a lie, the pigs sold Boxer to a knacker. When the knacker came around the van still said knacker. One of the animals saw, but the pigs gave an excuse to why it said that clover and the other believed it. The pig even used the money they made to buy alcohol, and that breaks one of the commandments. “As Clover looked down the hillside her eyes filled with tears.
If she could have spoken her thoughts, it would have been to say that this was not what they had aimed at when they had set themselves years ago to work for the overthrow of the human race. These scenes of terror and slaughter were not what they had looked forward to on that night when old Major first stirred them to rebellion… Instead she did not know why – they had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes.
Despite seeing all of hat, and knowing it was wrong she just sits and let it happen. Clover knows that the pigs have done the animal farm wrong, but doesn’t confront the problem. She sees the unfairness being done to her friends, and eventually, it happens to her. She was forced to work past the normal horse retirement age, and she doesn’t have the best health now. Clover is a great example of how ignoring the problems, and conforming can lead to problems for yourself and love ones. Unlike Clover, Sojourner Truth was a complete nonconformist. She stood for something and she let the world know what it was.
Sojourner Truth was an ctivist, she fought for freedom, civil rights, and women’s rights. Sojourner Truth went against societal norms. She believed everyone should be free, and that the color of your skin shouldn’t matter, and whether you’re male or female you should be treated fairly. Sojourner Truth was a public speaker, she spoke about women’s rights all over the world. “If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again! Sojourner truth said this at women’s right convention in Ohio on May 29,1821. Sojourner truth had a gift with words, and she used it to nonconform and get her point across. She also used this gift to talk about equal rights. “Children, who made your skin white? Was it not God? Who made mine black? Was it not the same God? Am I to blame, therefore, because my skin is black? “Sojourner truth used god as a way to show what was wrong with society. She’d said things like this quote to appeal to people religiously. Also being a religious person, and knew God created all men and woman, black or white equal.
She was a nonconformist because she challenged the society by saying quality is for all when the majority of people thought that white males were superior to all especially a black female. Sojourner truth made sure that she got treated fair. Sojourner Truth got what she wanted and nothing less. Sojourner Truth didn’t face any major bad consequence like people of her time who opposed society. She had won her son freedom by being one of the first Black females to go to court against a white man and won. In her narrative of her life, Sojourner Truth said, “Oh my God! I know’d Il’d have him again. I was sure God would help me to get him.
Why I felt so tall within-l felt as if the power of a ation was with me! ” this quote shows how to determine to do right by her son. She wanted to free him she didn’t care about the consequences, so she went to court. She won and was rewarded with her son’s freedom. Even Though a few years later he went to work on a ship, and never return home. She was still able to nonconform and win. In the end Sojourner Truth nonconformity help black people, her son, and women. What I learned from Clover and Sojourner Truth is that in the situation where your rights are tested you have to nonconform to get them back or it’s like you never had them at all.
If you’re willingly letting an oppressor take your and others rights you are a conformist. If you stand up for others and yourself in a time of oppression you are a nonconformist. Clover was a conformist she saw the problem, but instead of trying to fix them, she let it happen and she lives a pretty sad life. On the other hand, sojourner Truth was a nonconformist, she challenged the majority views during her time period, and impacted millions of lives. In conclusion, when you’re in a predicament where you have to choose to either be like everyone else or fight for something meaningful, fight!
