Judgment is commonly referred as an evaluation or an opinion. The word is often seen with a negative connotation of criticism. Yet, as much of a negative connotation as it withholds it is an action used to give one’s opinion about something. As our time period changes and the norms and standards change so does our judgment and views of the world. Thus, leading to the judgment of significant events that allow for the development of knowledge. This allows for the questioning of certain areas of knowledge and key events that allow for their development.
Leading to the questioning of the importance of the criticism when allowing for the development of knowledge. Some areas to consider when looking at key events and their development would be natural science, history, and mathematics. The historical development of areas of knowledge is often considered the development of knowledge over time. This development is the product of many key events evolving. Key events are the fundamentals of the historic development of the areas of knowledge. This is seen in the natural sciences. In this area there must be a first time event for others to come after it.
It can be considered as the event that set the “standards” or the “norm” on how to view things. This may lead to question if certain events exist without criticism? Certain discoveries are often criticized and viewed negatively. A specific example of this would be first registered immunization. Edward Jenner published his work in 1798 after he had developed a vaccine that would protect people against smallpox (IAC 2016). Jenner had decided to publish his work two years after he had tested his theory on a small boy. Jenner believed that the vaccine (cowpox) allowed for protection from the smallpox.
At the time that Jenner presented his findings many did not agree with his evidence. A specific group who was against Jenner was the Royal Society of Medicine. “The Society rejected the paper and suggested that Jenner cease his cowpox investigations” (Belongia, 2003). To them it seemed as something impossible. Many did not approve the idea that people who were exposed to cowpox would allow for the immunization to smallpox. Within this discovery there were many oppositions. Yet, this discovery allowed for many others. In 1877, Pasteur presented The Germ Theory of Disease.
When the theory was presented many people did not agree with it. They believed that his reasons were not clear. This changed when Pasteur boiled broth and covered it. After days the broth did not grow anything. (Smith 2012) This allowed for people to understand the bacteria that would grow on the broth would come from the outside. With the event of this occurring Pasteur was then able to go back and explain how smallpox spread and the importance of a vaccine. The discovery of the key events brought up many people’s ideas and perspectives. Many disagreed with the discoveries and did not approve of the methods used.
The view of many key events is often seen in both perspectives, allowing for their to be an equal view on both sides. Other events occurred without having criticism. During the 6th century, Pythagoras explained his theorem and was praised by many philosophers. He not only explained the Pythagorean theorem, but was able to prove that the inside of a triangle equals 180 and that Venus was the same star during the day and at night. (O’Connor) By now many theories were accepted by the Greeks. Praises were given not only to Socrates, Plato or Aristotle, but to Pythagoras for embracing theories.
Many of his proofs allowed for many other theories to be explained. The theorems that Pythagoras gave where a stepping stone for other mathematicians and allowed for many other theorems to be made. Thus, showing that events may be existent without criticism. Instead, they can include praise and lead to a good outcome. Over time, more developments are made in knowledge after certain key events there are also many human developments that occurred. Thus, leading to the question “to what extent does human development affect the judgment of people? Some changes are often considered societal developments.
Societal development affect the view of a general population. An example of this would be the view of African slaves. During the 17th century Africans were considered to be inferior to the other races and were often referred to as animals. They were brought to the Americas by force and then were turned into slaves. At the time American colonists did not believe it was ethically wrong to hold people against their will. Slaves were considered uneducated due to their different customs and their way of life. The African slaves had a different language than the colonists.
This created a language barrier because the colonist did not attempt to learn the native language, but forced the slave to learn English. During this time, slaves were also considered rude due to not having the same beliefs. Many of the slaves that had come from Africa where part of the native tribes that believed in Animism, a religion based on the life and spirit of any biotic or abiotic objects. (Animism) On the other hand the majority of the colonist had faith in Christianity, due to it being one of the largest religions that had come from the mainland.
Due to the intolerance and ignorance in culture slaves that were brought from Africa were viewed and treated differently. However, this changed when the African Americans assimilated to the “American culture” in a lapse of about 250 years. Through, the lapse in time the colonies became a nation and separated from their mainland to become the United States of America, this lead to colonist becoming Americans. During this time, many American colonist realized that slaves were people and deserved a better treatment. This being because of the assimilation of the African culture to the American culture.
This lead to the idea of slaves being people as well and having the right to be free. As people came together, many colonists realized that their actions were ethically wrong. This lead to the change in the mindset of many. Their change in mind also created a change in the treatment of the people. Although, humans undergo changes in mindset the overall judgment does change, one of this examples would be the social norms that are often placed on people. As time lapses and people are often said to be modernized it may not always be the case.
The biggest example of this would be the social norms of the woman’s role. Women have always been considered the primary person to be at home. The person that should make sure that the home is clean and that the children are well. As time progressed, women were given right and opportunities to work, leading to have gender equalities between the males and the female. Yet, this is not always the case for even though it is acceptable for a mother to work, she is often criticized for not spending enough time with her children. Many mothers often feel like they have twice the work as a This being because the male is never considered the one who must do all the home duties and their job. The traditional role that the male plays in a family is to be the home provider. This has been the norm for a long time. This norm is followed through many cultures. Gender roles seem to exist although, humans are constantly developing. Certain events and their representations will always have the same judgment over time. Many key events obtained representations. Leading for us to question if certain representations can exist without judgment.
A representation of events cannot exist without certain opinions. Many representations are given negative connotations. This has been seen with the confederate flag. To some it is a symbol of pride to another it is a symbol of captivity. This is due to the emotion the flag brings. While many feel like the flag is a symbol of solidarity and independence, others see the flag as a symbol of racism and slavery. Both of the sides look at it with different emotions and motifs. The judgment of the symbol is different based upon the person and their ideas. Different people have different mindsets and differ in their iews.
Key events in the historical development should be judged by the standards of their occurring time. The human mindset will always give criticism and judgment to the events and their outcome. Sometimes there are events that are judged without irrelevant to our current time. It seems irrelevant for us to look at an event that happened 200 years ago and evaluated with the modern mindset. This being because we as humans do not hold the same mindset as our ancestors from 200 years ago. It is said if we look back into our past it would help us with our future.
One may take in the significance of an event and develop from it. This is seen though natural science and mathematics because humans are constantly using past theorems and ideas to develop new theories and hypothesis. Past information allows for the development of new and relevant facts. However one can not take the same method use to create those theorems for our technology and procedures changes. We can take the general idea but not the evaluation. Similarly, in ethics the general mindset changes overtime. In particularly the idea that everyone no matter their race, religion, or beliefs should have basic human rights.
