Nowadays we face this ugly despising reality that we so simple mindedly focus on and which we love to base our day to day lives on. It is called the “perfect” size and/or look. In today’s twisted society people are so swift and quick to point out a person’s flaws and how they look. We are so quick to do it, sometimes we do not even notice ourselves doing so. But then again this whole notion is birthed before we even completely understand the meaning of being bias or racist which does not only mean against a person because of race, but it means discriminatory actions rather against ethnicity, weight, and or background.
That is where we find ourselves in the wrong, because in some form we all are “racist,” and we learn to do so from two of the main things we least expect- Barbie and Ken. As a human with feelings and doubts where does one gets off the right to criticize someone else because they are not what society believes they should be? With that in the back of one’s mind. Social profiling, youthful influences, and false body perceptions are huge influences on a person’s outlook. Notably social profiling is a huge influence on the preconceived perception that someone should look or be some type of way.
Everywhere we turn social profiling is upright and close stirring the pot. Whether in reference to the use of a person’s social status or basic discrimination determined by ones’ profile; social media such as Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all comes into because, yes when we create an account on all of these we agree to certain rules and regulations, but none of them are enforced. Allowing harassment and or foul language on another persons’ pictures/ statues. Trying to push one in a “social corner” telling them how to look and depleting a persons’ mental and physical view on external and internal value.
Marilyn Monroe said it best, “to all the girls who think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one its society who is ugly. ” That is the exact point Prager is trying to make when she says “Barbie’s vast popularity is that she was also a ’60s woman: into free love and fun colors, anti-class, and possessed of a real model boyfriend. ” Showing how even in the midst of feminist movement Barbie was created an idolized figure with full breast and a body that was not yet even seen on a doll before then. Nevertheless as children this idea of a perfect body is birth before a child at such a youthful stage in life.
As young children not understanding the truth about beauty. Barbie, Ken, and other dolls and action figures secretly unnoticeably teaching a young child that they should be a size zero with a blessed bust area, and a great model boyfriend. Lastly, false body perception is one of three reasons because of so many advertisements advertising false commercials and weight pills telling individuals that if one takes this, then one can look like a young J. Lo herself, when we all know that a few television advertised medication cannot and will not fix the way the way we nor social media view ourselves and others.
As Oprah Winfrey once said“Step Away from the Mean Girls… and say bye-bye to feeling bad about your looks. Are you ready to stop colluding with a culture that makes so many of us feel physically inadequate? Say goodbye to your inner critic, and take this pledge to be kinder to yourself and others. This is a call to arms. A call to be gentle, to be forgiving, to be generous with yourself. The next time you look into the mirror, try to let go of the story line that says you’re too fat or too shallow, too ashy or too old, your eyes are too small or your nose too big; just look into the mirror and see your face.
When the criticism drops away, what you will see then is just you, without judgment, and that is the first step toward transforming your experience of the world. ” In conclusion beauty is a decision not a menu at a fast food restaurant. “There is nothing more rare, nor more beautiful, than a woman being unapologetically herself; comfortable in her perfect imperfection. To me, that is the true essence of beauty. ” (Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the) The choice may be objected to negative social use, influences as a child, and famous people/ magazines advocating for bodies that are not ideal.
