Nick came from a wealthy family but Gatsby came from a poor family but they both work for their money. Gatsby is spending a lot of money on parties for people he even doesn’t even know, just to find his love of his life Daisy. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald develops the two related themes of Money and Social Status/Class and American Dream. In the Great Gatsby money can buy you Rolls-Royces, dresses, and really nice shirts, but in the end it can’t buy you happiness.
“There was music from my neighbor’s house through the summer night. “On weeks-ends his Rolls-Royce became an mnibus, bearing parties to and from the city, between nine in the morning and long past midnight. ” (39) Gatsby is throwing expensive parts to find Daisy again and to be happy again too. “I remembered of course that the World’s Series had been fixed in 1919 but if I had thought of it at all I would have thought of it as a thing that merely HAPPENED, the end of some inevitable chain. It never occurred to me that one man could start to play with the faith of fifty million people-with the single-mindedness of a burglar blowing a safe. (73)
Meyer Wolfsheim fixed the World Series was very big crime. But the burglar gets caught, by time goes by you won’t be high class to benefit your wealth. “I couldn’t forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. ” (179) Rich people’s crimes just don’t seem to count as much as poor people crimes.
Happiness can’t be bought from any person. Money can buy you Rolls-Royces, dresses, and really nice shirts, but in the end it can’t buy you happiness, and neither puts up in a Social Class. “The Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries onto-day. “(3) Nick comes from a noble family that his family American Dream of wealth is respectability through hard work.
James Gatz-that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career-when he saw Dan Cody’s yacht drop anchor over the most insidious flat on Lake Superior. “(98) Gatsby comes from a poor family, and when Dan Cody past away, Gatsby didn’t get Dan Cody money. Gatsby work hard to be rich so that is why Gatsby got ride of his real name because he came from a poor family. “I couldn’t forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It as all very careless and confused.
They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made. ” (179) Now Gatsby has no longer about Daisy’s love, Gatsby is still trying to think about her feelings on his own terms. Money buys things except happiness and happiness will last long except the things you buy. In the Great Gatsby people came to the United States to have a better life to live in. Her voice is full of money,’ he said suddenly. That was it, I’d never understood before.
It was full of money– that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals’ song of it. High in a white place the king’s daughter, the golden girl. “(120) Daisy’s voice promises money, and American Dream, it’s really hard to argue that Daisy the high in white palace the king’s daughter, golden girl. “The Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother who came here in fifty-one, sent a ubstitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries onto-day. (3)
Nick’s grandfather’s brother came to the United States to start a new life, Nick’s grandfather open a hardware to earn money by doing hard work. Earning money is by earning the hard way by doing work. The Great Gatsby has Money and Social Status/Class and American Dream that develops the themes in THe Great Gatsby. In the end Money buying happiness will not last very long. The second important is that Daisy isn’t happy with Tom but when it comes to Gatsby she is really happy to see. Here, deares’. “She groped around in a waste-basket she had with her on the bed and pulled out the string of pearls. Take ’em down- stairs and give ’em back to whoever they belong to. Tell ’em all Daisy’s change’ her mine.
Say: ‘Daisy’s change’ her mine! ” (Fitzgerald 76) Daisy knows that the expensive string of pearls that tom gave her is a chain. When Daisy was drunk she said things on her mind like she wants to change her mind and marry the man she truly love. She wanted to marry Gatsby but at the time Gatsby had no money, but Daisy mother want her to get marry because Gatsby wasn’t rich. That is why she got married to Tom because he was rich. “They’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such-such beautiful shirts before. ” (Fitzgerald 96) When Tom invites Daisy into his big house, and when Daisy so Gatsby closet and his shirts she started to cry because his shirts were very pretty.
Daisy regrets marrying tom but she is happy to see and be with him. The finally is when Gatsby and Daisy meet for a second time and they are really happy to see one of each other. “If it wasn’t for he mist we could see your home across the bay,” said Gatsby “You always have a green light that burns all night at the end of your dock. (Fitzgerald 102) When Gatsby and Daisy sees each other, dreams starts to show because Gatsby hasn’t seen Dasby before he left to the army. After Gatsby and Daisy meet again Daisy has been going to Gatsby house close to everyday. “She began to cry-she cried and cried. I rushed out and found the mother’s maid, and we locked the door and got her into a cold bath. She wouldn’t let go of the letter.
She took it into the tub with her and squeezed it up into a wet ball, and only let me eave it in the soap-dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow. (Fitzgerald 76) At that time she hasn’t marry Tom yet, so when Gatsby wrote Daisy a letter she wouldn’t stop crying and wouldn’t let the letter go, because she was still in love with Gatsby. They Both finally meet one another for a second time and they are happy to see each other. Daisy is really happy to see Gatsby again, but when it comes to Tom she isn’t happy with him because Tom had an affair. If Daisy isn’t happy with tom, she should be with someone that she would be happy with like with Gatsby.
