The pigs maintain “power [of] authority, strength, [and capability] to act,” (“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutly”) to oppress in order to manipulate the other animals. The novel Animal Farm, by George Orwell, demonstrate how the pigs’ intelligence and education tools of oppression can convince the other animals to support them. Intelligence and education tools are important to be capable of oppressing. It allows the pigs to change the Seven Commandments of Animalism successfully to manipulate the other animals to choose that their way is best to benefit them.
Using their skills constantly also reveal no chance for the other animals to argue about what they say when the pigs adapt the dogs as their military force. To complete these steps to achieve an obtain control, the pigs command the other animals to work hard so that they do not have the time to think for themselves or develop their intellects. The pigs use their intelligence and education as tools of oppression to manipulate the other animals to think their way is best for them.
In order to convince the other animals that the pigs’ way is best for them, they manipulate them by changing the Seven Commandments of Animalism for their own benefits. For example, when the pigs drank whisky from the farmhouse cellar, Napoleon joins them and gets very drunk. The pigs’ power allows them to claim privileges for themselves, which causes the commandment “No animal shall drink alcohol to become the new commandment “No animal shall drink alcohol to excess” (Orwell 73).
The pigs also were sleeping in beds unlike the other animals and lie that the commandment mentioned that “[t]he rule was against sheets… ” (Orwell 46). Even after this, the animals noticed that the pigs wore human clothes. Muriel then decides to question the pigs, “[a]re the Seven Commandments the same as they used to be…? ” (Orwell 76). As a result, the pigs manipulated them by changing the old commandment to “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than other” (Orwell 90). The pigs manipulated the other animals by changing the Seven Commandments to prove that their way is the greatest.
The pigs adapt the dogs as a military force to fear the other animals so they are mouth-closed to argue about what they say. Napoleon commands on his dogs to slaughter many animals in the farm along with breaking a rule of Animalism (Orwell 56, 82, 85). An animal could be slaughtered by Napoleon if it disobeyed his orders (Orwell 56). In another time, ““[the dogs) dashed straight for Snowball, who only… [in] that moment… was out of the door… ” (Orwell 35) and trying to eliminate him. This made the other animals frightened and terrified from their sharp action (Orwell 35-36).
Right after Snowball’s elimination, “the three dogs who happened to be with [Squealer] crowed so threateningly, that [the other animals] accepted his explanation without further questions” (Orwell 39) by using his persuasive talkative way. The use of manipulation through the dogs has a sense of fear on the other animals to prevent them from having a say. Leading up to an attain power, the pigs purposely kept the other animals working hard so that they have no time to think or develop their own intellects.
In concern of the other animals improving their intellects, the pigs commanded the other animals to harvest the crops while they consume the milk (Orwell 16). “All that year the animals worked like slaves” (Orwell 40) by giving all their effort to get the rebuilding of the windmill done in time excepted of two years (Orwell 38). The animals were busy rebuilding the windmill as the pigs told them, which prevented them from thinking and developing their intellects to realize that the pigs manipulated them. As November came, the other animals have waken up to a terrible sight that “[t]he windmill was in ruins” (Orwell 47).
Being that, Napoleon did not approve more delays for the rebuilt of the windmill (Orwell 48-49). The other animals were endure causing to loss of time to think or develop their own abilities. In conclusion, the pigs manipulated the other animals using their intelligence and education tools of oppression so the other animals will think the pigs’ method is their best option. The pigs changed the Seven Commandments of Animalism to manipulate the other animals to support their way as it is the best. Thus, the pigs manipulated the other animals using their dogs as a military force to assure they do not argue against.
