There are many reasons why people choose to become vegetarians or vegans. For some, it is a moral or ethical decision based on their beliefs about the treatment of animals. Others may do it for health reasons, as vegetarian and vegan diets have been shown to offer numerous benefits. And still others simply enjoy the taste and variety of plant-based foods.

Whatever the reason, more and more people are making the switch to vegetarianism or veganism. If you’re thinking of doing the same, it’s important to understand the basics of these diets and what they entail.

Vegetarianism is defined as a diet that excludes meat, poultry, fish, and shellfish. Veganism takes things a step further and excludes all animal products, including eggs, dairy, and honey.

There are many different types of vegetarianism and veganism, and people follow these diets for a variety of reasons. Because of diverse reasons, people make choices that are bound to change their lives. While someones’ livelihood may not be gravely affected by certain choices, others require more thoughtful consideration before acting. When I was 22, I chose to become a vegetarian – an often underrated lifestyle decision that many don’t understand the severity of. Though religious inclination is a common reason for vegetarianism, it can also result from health and ethical issues.

Vegetarians do not eat any animal flesh. Some will also not use products that have been tested on animals or those that contain animal by-products such as leather and fur.

The reasons for this action are many and varied. Some people choose to become Vegetarians for health reasons. They believe that a vegetarian diet is the best way to maintain optimum health. Vegetarianism has been shown to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, cancer, obesity, and high blood pressure. A vegetarian diet can also help to lower cholesterol levels. Another reason people become Vegetarians is for ethical reasons.

They believe that it is wrong to kill animals for food when there are so many other sources of nutrition available. Vegetarians also believe that raising animals for food is cruel and inhumane. They believe that Factory Farming, where animals are raised in cramped and filthy conditions is particularly cruel. Many Vegetarians also believe that it is wrong to eat meat because of the way animals are treated in the meat industry.

There are also environmental reasons for becoming a Vegetarian. The raising of livestock for food uses large amounts of water, land, and energy. It also results in pollution from animal waste and the clearing of forests for pastureland. Some people believe that by becoming Vegetarians they can help to preserve the environment.

Whatever the reason for choosing Vegetarianism, it is a decision that should not be made lightly. Becoming a Vegetarian requires a commitment to changing your diet and lifestyle. It is important to do some research and to make sure that you are getting all the nutrients your body needs.

Vegetarians need to be especially careful to get enough protein, iron, and vitamin B12. There are many books and websites available that can help Vegetarians plan a healthy diet. Becoming a Vegetarian is a decision that each person must make for themselves. It is not a decision that should be made lightly or without thought or research.

Here are the key reasons that led me to vegetarianism. Most people understand how essential it is to live a healthy life, and being a vegetarian supports this goal. Multiple researches have found that there is a positive correlation between vegetarianism and increased lifespan. The data suggests vegetarians tend to live longer than those who eat meat due largely in part to decreased risks for developing cancer or suffering from cardio-vascular diseases (Jason, para 2).

Not only does being a vegetarian have an impact on one’s physical health, but it also has an effect on the environment. The raising of livestock causes deforestation and the overgrazing of land. In South America, “70% of former forested land in the Amazon is used as pasture, while in Central America, 50% of deforested land is used for grazing” (The Vegetarian Site, para 7).

As well as this, the demand for water to raise animals is extremely high. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef (The Vegetarian Site, para 8). The practice of being a vegetarian can help reduce the amount of resources used and also help preserve our environment.

There are also ethical concerns when it comes to eating meat. Animals that are raised for food often live in inhumane conditions. They are confined to small spaces and many are given hormones and antibiotics. These animals lead a miserable life before they are slaughtered. By being a vegetarian, we can vote with our fork and say no to this type of animal cruelty.

So, these are some of the reasons why I believe it is important to be a vegetarian. Vegetarianism has many benefits that impact not only our own health, but also the environment and the treatment of animals. I hope that more people will consider becoming vegetarians so that we can all live healthier and more compassionate lives.
