The Role Of Learning In My Life

In life one’s personality plays a vital role in the decisions that, that individual makes. Life is a journey and in the journey there will be obstacles, motivators, complexities and excitement. Based on your personal construct on life you will certainly find the know how to charter your compass.

My passion for education came about in All Age School when I discovered how lovely I wrote on the chalkboard, which surprisingly was far better than my teacher. My teacher then, Mrs. Ludford would asked me daily to put the work on the chalkboard. However, by the time I started writing she would call some of the other teachers to come and examine my handwriting on the chalkboard. They would come and encourage me that I would make an excellent teacher.

By the time I reached high school the passion for teaching continued to grow. I had some excellent teachers who were very smart and had the ability to become anything they wanted to become. These teachers taught with passion and enthusiasm that made you want to become apart of this noble profession. I can remember vividly Mr. A. P. Simpson my English Language teacher – he never walked with a text book but you could be sure that you would have to write at least four (4) pages of information that he gave vividly from memory. By this time, my thoughts of being a pediatrician started to linger and teaching became my passion.

Certainly, I was now in a place where I wanted to be even better than my teachers in imparting knowledge to those students I will come in contact with. Today, I am a teacher who has the passion to teach and change lives in a positive way. I have lived and learn how to motivate, entertain, educate, make a difference and influence those who I come in contact with.

Knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses can be very helpful in one’s career choice and in making other important decisions. I believe that I am self motivated and determined. This can be seen in my effort to become a master teacher in my pursuit of professional prominence. My parents never made it pass primary education and this also gives me the drive to wanted to get further in life. This motivation will also help me to help them.

I am super organized in both my professional and personal life. You can be sure if I’m asked for an items, be it a book or a pair of socks, I’ll be able to say where to find it. I am always given positive feedback from my principal and colleagues about my organisational skills. I am timely, dependable, responsible and a true confidant. Jamaicans like to say, that they are fashionable late, I like to be fashionable early. I can recall having only one late on my school reports throughout high school and I carry this same spirit in all aspect of my life but especially in my profession/work. My colleagues who live in surrounding districts to our workplace in Arthurs Seat, are always asking “ if the rain is falling in my bed” because most times I get to work long before they do and I travel all the way from Spanish Town. As I get more mature I am given more and more responsibility, this too is as a result of my dependability. I am good at giving my students the opportunity at making real-life connections between teaching materials, subjects, and situations where the knowledge gained will be beneficial to them.

My most significant weakness is being shy, however, I am working on getting over it as I take on more roles in public speaking. I am now the acting senior teacher at work and I am called upon at times without notice to make oral presentations. This masters programme has also really helped in that regard as group work is a must and presentations are a given. Another weakness is that sometimes I come across to people as being aggressive. I am using my strength of having a beautiful smile and a pleasant demeanor, to counter this aggression. One other weakness as it relates to my professional development is not having high end technology at my workplace which I truly believe would better help to enhance my lessons. At present I have started making enquiries to find out how many residents within the school community are interested in getting internet. This is being done in an effort to get as many persons on board so the telecommunication provider will want to grant my request of internet in Arthurs Seat.

The theory that influences me the most is the Personal Construct Theory of Personality by George Kelly (1950’s). Constructs are inherently personal base, they are based on each person’s life experiences. Each person’s system of construct is unique and it is the individual’s nature of the experience that forms differences between people. Therefore, my views, traditions and decisions are influenced and factored by my personality and experiences and thus, this will allow me to use my observations about my world into either positive or negative.

My personality has aid me in making me who I am today. This theory has allowed me to recognize that values and attitudes one possess will either make or break you. Your environment along with nature builds your character. Thus, you are a product of your environment which makes you into a unique person. In life recurrences play an important role in personal construct theory which allows me to reconsider many decisions that would allow my own moral beliefs and values to minimize. However, the construct have emerged because they allow me to reflect frequently recurrences in my experience. This theory certainly have aid me in becoming the organized person I am today, because constructs allow one to become organized in a hierarchical way.

Mark you today as an individual, I am my own person, I make my own free choices and I can hold my own charter without being led. I am me, I am special, there is no one I rather be than me. Personality theory supports the view of human nature in all sense, because it is the personality of each individual within a community that makes our society unique. Everyone has different views and perspectives that give the world the turn and twist that it needs.

From an early age I recognized the struggles faced by my parents and was determined to make a better life for myself and family. My god given talents- that is innate qualities that made me who I am with aid of my environment change my life forever. Due to the fact that, there has always been the belief that there is a fundamental need to predict event that I have experienced. This allowed me to interpret and construct new events. Thus, like any scientist, you view your hypothesis and assume outcomes. These have guided me into making decisions that have benefited me educationally, physically and emotionally.

Learning is a lifelong experience of which I am a part. Being a teacher means that I am reflective in my practice/endeavors and will always strive to improve on what I already know in an effort to develop professionally as well as to move with the changing world and to keep up with 21st century learners. The definition of “learning” that I can relate to is one given by Pritchard that states “A change in behavior as a result of experience or practice”. As I am presently reading for my masters, I am learning to adopt and change to meet the needs of my students as I develop professionally. As I study and conduct many and varied research, I am developing as a more focus individual. This development is taking place both inside and outside my classroom. “Learning is not exclusive to the domain of an education system. Learning begins a very long time before school; continues for even longer after school; and happens rapidly, and in parallel with school, in a great number of different ways and settings”. I agree with this statement as I am learning at this present moment as I complete this assignment.

Learning is a natural process that each individual acquires at different points in their lives. When we learn there should be change seen in us, whether in our personal or professional lives. I will continue to light the flame of knowledge not just for school, but for life.
