John Santrock’s Theories on Human Development

Development theories are collective concepts and visions of theories that explains desirable transition in the society. These theories are often based on social principles and science disciplines approaches. In the Essentials of Lifespan Development publication, John Santrock has demonstrated a number of theories with regards to human development. This paper highlights the concepts and principles of development theories which I found fascinating and most appealing.

The principle and concept based on psychodynamic theory is substantial in understanding human development. Psychodynamic theory demonstrates that human development is dependent on how well individuals resolves different conflicts they face. This is important and relevant in today’s society. Peaceful resolution of conflicts among people impacts them positively and thus leading to personality development. Personal growth is determined by how well individuals interacts and handles different challenges. Therefore, the principles and concepts based on psychodynamic theory are vital with regards to human development.

Learning theory plays a significant role in shaping an individual’s behavior. The principles and concepts of this theory puts emphasis on an individual’s behaviorism. Learning theory is constituting both the behaviorism and social learning theory. This theory helps examine if an individual’s behavior is appropriate in the society and hence determines whether its rewarded or punished. Learning theory is consequential in human development since it contributes in developing and determining a person’s future behavior.

In contrast to learning and psychodynamic theories which I found appealing, Information processing theory was less appealing. This theory holds its principles and concepts on how the computer devices works in elucidating human development. The explanations are rather inadequate and therefore making it difficult for an individual to fully comprehend the information processing theory.
