James Watt’s contributions in engineering

Engineers are people who resolve problems and innovate and James Watt was one of the milestones of Engineers. James Watt was born January 30,1736 at Greenock, United Kingdom. His Father was a carpenter and shipbuilder, and his mother was well educated. Watt was homeschooled in his early years due to health reasons. His mother taught him reading while his father taught him arithmetic and writing since his Father (GrandFather) taught mathematics. He also worked on assembling different objects from his father’s workshop. From this is when he began to be interested to the skill of crafting instruments Engineer. Deciding at age 17 to be a mathematical instrument maker. At first James Watt went to The University Of Glasgow, and then in 1755 he went to London where he found a teacher to train him. Although his health broke down within a year, he learned to work well as most journeymen. Returning to Glasgow, he opened a shop in 1757 at the university and made mathematical instruments. He met a scientist Joseph Black, who developed the concept of latent heat.

James Watt was a Mechanical Engineer and inventor whose innovations into steam engines resulted in the Industrial Revolution. His improvements into the steam engine made it more efficient. in 1765 during his association with the Glasgow he made his first and most important invention, the separate condenser for the Newcomen engine. He patented it in 1769 and developed it commercially, first in partnership with John Roebuck and later with Matthew Boulton. The initial success was followed over for some time by a sequence of additional inventions related to the steam engine to translate the engine’s reciprocating motion into rotary motion without employing the common crank. The application to the steam engine of the double-acting principle that was then commonly used in pumps; the “expansive principle” whereby Watt recognized that because of its power. Besides those contributions to the technology of the steam engine, Watt also originated a perspective drawing machine, a letter-copying process, an indicator liquid for testing acidity, and a steam wheel (which he was unable to perfect) for producing rotary motion directly from steam pressure.

James Watt was important because he contributed to the Industrial Revolution by inventing the steam engine. Without James Watt the world wouldn’t be the same due to the following. The wouldn’t have developed near as fast without the steam engine. Not only did the railroad steam engine help to develop a nationwide transportation system, but it was also important to the development of the farming, ranching and mining which all were needed to make the country grow. There were steam traction engines that were the first farm tractors, and were used for harvesting crops and plowing the land so it would be ready for planting more crops. Many ancestors came from their native land on steam ships, those that arrived in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. It would definitely have been a long struggle to develop nations without steam engines, and sailing ships wouldn’t have been able to keep up with trade and immigration. Lastly The industrial revolution would’ve been held up without the steam engine which was one of the earlier inventions that helped it grow. In conclusion James Watt was essential to modern day success due to the impact of his work.
