Galileo Galilei: The Impact Of The Scientific Revolution

The scientific revolution caused a major impact on our history today. This revolution unfolded roughly between the years of 1500-1750, stating with Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) to Isaac Newton9 (1642-1727). (http://users. clas. ufl. edu/ufhatch/pages/03-sci-rev/sci-rev-teaching/03sr-definition-concept. htm) This revolution drastically changes the viewpoints of society by changing concepts that were widely accepted since ancient times. Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton were all major figures hope not only helped change the mind set of individuals during their time but also helped shaped the future for modern technology and science.

This revolution took place throughout many nations of Europe. This revolution changed the ideas and teachings of many of the great philosophers, such as Plato and Aristotle. People like Nicholas Copernicus, Galileo Galilee, and Isaac Newton were able to change the idea of Scholasticism. Scholasticism encompassed the philosophical debates and methods of learning practiced by theologians during the late middle ages. The idea of scholasticism was widely accepted throughout the world, even the church. People who revolutionized the minds of people were charged with heresy by the Catholic Church and eventually put on trial. he story of the revolution begins with a scholar by the name of Nicholas Copernicus.

He was born on February 19, 1473 in Torun, Poland. Around the year of 1508 he began to develop the idea of his own celestial model, a heliocentric (sun center) planetary system. This idea would disprove the ideas of the philosopher Aristotle, who said there was a geocentric planetary system. Although he started his research about the heliocentric universe, it wasn’t until 1543, the year he died, when he published his controversial work De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelesttium (On the Revolutions of Heavenly Bodies).

The book ironically was dedicated to Pope Paul III in an attempt to cull the Catholic Church’s softer reception. The church soon banned Copernicus’ book in 1616, but eventually upheld its ban. (http://www. biography. com). One of the greatest minds known to mankind, Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), attended the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pisa. Although Galileo was an astronomer, he entered the university to study medicine, but his interests gradually changed and soon studied philosophy. Galileo with hard work and studying, was able to invent the telescope.

With the telescope, he was able to discover sun spots and new moons around Saturn. Raymnd Seeger wrote a book called, “Galileo Galilei, His Life and His Work”. Within the book he explains that the discoveries of sun spots and new moons did not Confirm the ideas of Copernicus. He writes: Such discoveries, to be sure, did not confirm the Copernican hypothesis. They did; however give credence to the existence of a universe, i. e. , not a duoverse with a perfect heaven and an imperfect earth, and to the probability that the earth is not the center of motion for all heavenly bodies. Seeger, pg 247)

These discoveries have helped people today understand how the sun functions and also inspired many scientists today to fly to the moon. Galileo negated traditional astronomy with his work, Dailoge on the Two Chief Systems of the World. In this work, he posted his finding about different celestial bodies including the many different moons of Jupiter, the different craters on these moons, and sun spots. This book was very controversial to the Catholic church and soon put the works of Galileo on trial for heresy.

Galieo, when he was on trial against the church, knelt in front of the council and stated that the earth isn’t the center of the universe but the sun is the true center. The Church soon excommunicated Galileo from the church, but his excommunication was upheld due to more people starting to widely accept the ideas of modern science. His book, Dailoge on the Two Chief Systems of the World, was removed from the Index, a former list of books banned from the Catholic Church, in 1775.

Paul Cardinal Pouper said in an interview done based on Galileo’s work, “We today know that Galileo was right in adopting the Copernican astronomical theory. ” (Cowell, New York Times) Lastly, Isaac Newton, who is known as the father for modern science, discovered the three laws of motion. These laws of motion helped explain how each object in the universe co-operates. These laws are universally accepted and still cannot be disproven. Along with discovering these universal laws, he also developed the foundation of a new math, Calculus.

Newton built his theory of Calculus based off the works of Isaac Barrow and John Wallis. The initial complication of Newton’s theory was that the calculations of finding curves and slopes was fairly simple, there is no method to give one individual point when given an exact slope. Today, all three of these great minds have influenced many minds today to continue research for many new and great discoveries. With the development of technology, we were able to see what is outside of our universe in very unique ways. Nicholas Copernicus showed through his works that our world revolves around the sun. ith this it showed modern scientists that not only the earth was part of the suns system but there were other plants that were in orbit around the sun.

With this it helped trigger the belief system of rational thought and inquiry. He inspired modern scientist to discover new galaxies because they saw that stars are also considered to be the center of many other universes around us today. (www. enotes. com) Next, Galileo’s invention of the modern telescope created one of the biggest contributions to the modern world. The telescope today has increased its use by making more high power telescopes that see deeper into the universe.

The modern telescope sees many new planets within our solar system and also planets that are in different galaxies. Galileo said, “Facts, which at first seem improbable will, even on scant explanation, drop the cloak which has hidden them and stand forth in naked and simple beauty. ” (http://northendwaterfront. com) his discoveries show people today that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. There are many possibilities waiting for us in the hidden universe of our minds. Lastly, Newton’s Laws of Universal Gravitation that he discovered are still with us today.

One perfect example of this is when the first moon landing occurred. The astronauts on this expedition did a test to see what would land first a brick or an apple. It showed that in a space of no gravitation resistance that they both would hit the ground at the same time just like it would on Earth. Along with this, his formation of Calculus has shown many mathematicians how to build many new things. Now with these principles set, people are able to take these ideas and build humungouse building, how long runways in airports should be, and the trajectory of rockets flying into space.

These fascinating inventions that we are surrounded by today. A great way to sum up how this revolution influenced writers today is a quote stated by Isaac Newton. He said, “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants. ” (www. brainyquote. com) This shows that the contributions done by the Scientific revolution have inspired people today to expand their own knowledge just like Newton, Galileo, and Copernicus. The revolution became successful due to the fact that it inspired people to expand the ideas of these great minds just lie all three of these Guys got inspired by people in the past.
