Does Eating While Multitasking Affects Your Health

Eating is essential, but choosing the right way to consume food is also very important. When consuming food, people tend to combine eating with other activities such as reading a book or watching videos. In this technology era, eating and watch video or surfing through social media like facebook, instagram or twitter is a lifestyle for many people. According to a study in University of Harvard, this habit is called mindful eating. This happens when you are focusing on eating but also aware of your surrounding. Majority of people have this habit because this was developed when they people are young. It is a good thing that technologies are advancing every day, but people should be aware of when to use it. There are place and time for everything. Even though it is enjoyable and comfortable, but this habit is a harm to your health. People should really consider eating without distractions. Having a video play or reading a book while eating seem very normal while growing, but this could really affect people’s health without them even knowing it. I wanted to do a research about this topic is because almost everywhere I go, I see people drink and eat their foods with some type of entertainments on. Whether it is a phone, or a book, people are distracting themselves from eating their meals. I remembered my teacher once said that this habit could be very harmful to your health. So, I have decided to take this opportunity to do a research on this topic and I think this is relevant to food choices and nutritions. This is relevant to food choices and nutritions because we humans are very easily to get distracted. Since technologies are everywhere nowadays, we can easily get access to them. People are one click away to get themselves on the web. It is a rare thing to see people eating without doing anything but eating. According to a study from the University of Harvard by Howard Lewine, people will likely to gain more weight if they eat while multitasking. People will tend to eat more than they should be. An average time for a person to finish their meal is about 20 minutes.

During those 20 minutes the brain will slowly send a signal to the body to say that we are full and we should not eat anymore. People will more likely to overeat if the food that they are consuming are high in sweet. This will caused people to consumed more calories than they actually needed. Whenever the television is on, majority of people will not just watch it, they will tend to get some food to go with it. Whether it is a bag of chips or a bag of popcorn, they are consuming it even though they are not feeling hungry. This is when the technologies are controlling our hunger and not our body. Eating while watching television will get us to eat more junk food because they are very easy to pick up and also easy for us to munch on a handful of those at once. This also contributes to the obesity rate in the United States. During the 20 minutes that we eat, our body sends the signal to our body that we have eaten enough and we should stop, but because we are distracted by the things we do while eating, we tend to ignore those signs. That will lead to more food intake, and eventually overeating. The movie theater is a great example of this because people will tend to buy a large size bag of popcorn to consume because they just want to eat while watching their movies. People are focused to the movie on screen and will likely to ignore the popcorn that they are eating and does not know when to stop. People sometimes buy food in a large quantity to fit of the movie that they are watching, they want to keep their mouth busy even though they are not hungry. That is why people do not feel full when they are watching a movie, but after the movie is finished, their stomach feel like heavy and full. Also, when we eat, our body metabolism will slow down and it will be a very long progress for food to be broken down. After eating a large amount of food with a slow metabolism, people will tend to have “food coma. ” After eating a large meal, people will tend to feel very sleepy and sleeping after just eaten a meal will affect the weight gain since the calories are being stored. A study that was conducted by Jeff Brunstrom showing that people who are playing video games while eating, easily forget what they ate, and consumed doubled the size of their portions. People sometimes forgot whether they ate or not, and will likely to snack on some junk food later in the day.

The Appetite journey conducted a study for three groups of women, one group is to simply eat, the other was to watch television while eating, and the last group was to play video games while eating. The result of that study shows that the last two groups with distractions ate more than the group with no distraction. This proved that we can control our meal selection and size when we eat. If people don’t pay attention to what we are doing when we are eating, this could negatively impact the food choice that we are eating. This small habit of eating will slowly contribute to the weight that people are gaining without knowing it. If people eat junk food while being distracted, this will help raise the obesity rate up in the future. People should start to limit the amount of time of their meal under 20 minutes and just simply eat. People should also start practicing their kids to eat without watching shows on the television. Kids learn while they are young, and this habit will follow them to their adult age. Kids learn by imitating what we do. This will help reduce the obesity rate by a some portions. Instead watching video or doing other things while we eat, people should focus on just eating for 10-15 minutes and see if that will help them enjoying their meal more. In the conclusion, eating with distraction could harm your health not just physical but also emotionally. People should start practicing eating with distraction free. Practicing this will help weight loss and it is also encouraging parents to do the same with their children, so that they can developed a better habit of eating when they grow up.
