Dan Amos Ethics

Dan Amos is the chairman and CEO of American Family Life Insurance Company (AFLAC). He has been with the company since it was founded in 1955, and he has been instrumental in its growth and success.

Amos has been a driving force behind AFLAC’s commitment to ethics and corporate responsibility. He has served on the company’s Board of Directors since 2001 and became chairman and CEO in 2003.

Amos has also been active in the community, serving on the boards of several charities and civic organizations. He is a member of the Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs of leading U.S. companies, and he serves on the board of directors for The Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank.

Amos began his career at AFLAC in 1973 as a sales agent. In 1987, he was named President, Chief Operating Officer (COO), and Chairman of the Board; and in 2001, he was promoted to CEO and Chairman of the Board (n.d.). Revenue increased from $2.7 billion to $9.6 billion during Amos’s first four years as Aflac’s CEO.

In 2004, Amos was ranked by BusinessWeek as the best CEO in America (Sloan, 2006). Under Amos’ leadership, Aflac has been noted for its ethical behavior. In 2005, Aflac was ranked by Business Ethics magazine as one of the “100 Best Corporate Citizens” ( Reference for Business, Encyclopedia of Business,2nd edition, n.d.). The company has also been honored by the Ethisphere Institute as one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” for 11 consecutive years (AFLAC Inc., 2018).

In 2016, Dan Amos stepped down as CEO but remained Chairman of the Board (AFLAC Inc., 2018). Paul S. Amos II, Dan’s son, was named President and CEO. Dan Amos continues to be an active member of the AFLAC Board and is involved in the strategic direction of the company.

Aflac has been a leader in ethical business practices and this is largely due to the ethical behavior of Dan Amos. He has set the tone for the company and its employees to behave in an ethical manner. As a result, Aflac has been recognized as one of the best companies to work for and one of the most ethical companies in the world.

The Aflac Duck advertising campaign, created by Amos, was so successful that by 2004 it had achieved recognition with 96% of Americans. Aflac’s revenue has increased steadily over the years and according to recent reports now exceeds $25.4 billion (AFLAC at a Glance, 2013).

In 2013, Dan Amos was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame. According to the organization, Amos was selected for his “visionary leadership in building AFLAC into one of America’s most recognizable companies” as well as his commitment to ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR) (Junior Achievement, 2013).

Amos has been a strong advocate for ethical business practices and has implemented several initiatives to ensure that AFLAC operates in an ethical manner. For example, Amos established the Office of Ethics and Compliance which is responsible for ensuring that employees comply with all applicable laws and regulations. In addition, AFLAC has adopted a Code of Business Conduct and Ethics that applies to all employees. The code provides guidance on a range of topics including conflicts of interest, bribery and corruption, and protecting company assets (AFLAC Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, 2013).

In addition to his work at AFLAC, Amos has also served on the boards of several organizations including the Council for Excellence in Government, the Georgia Research Alliance, and the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. He is a member of the Business Roundtable and has been recognized by a number of organizations for his ethical leadership, including being named one of “America’s Best CEOs” by Institutional Investor magazine (Dan Amos: Inductee, 2013).
